2011-12 NBA Season: Why Ricky Rubio's Injury Doesn't Destroy Playoff Hopes

Kevin HsuMar 11, 2012

With one injury, many fans have already decided to count the Timberwolves out of the playoffs. True, Ricky Rubio has been sensational and the team is not likely to play at the same level once losing him, but there is still hope for the Timberwolves to sneak into the playoffs.

As of right now, Portland, Dallas and Minnesota are fighting for the coveted eighth seed. As demoralizing as Rubio's injury seems, the Timberwolves can make the playoffs because of the following factors:

1. Depth: While the signing of J.J. Barea seemed unnecessary early on, it is clear now, that the move was smart. Barea was a member of the championship squad last year and was a huge reason for its success. His talent hasn't just disappeared, so there is still hope at the point guard position. Luke Ridnour always plays consistently and did a great job of helping the Bucks into the playoffs as Brandon Jennings' back up a few years ago. There is no reason that his consistent play and Barea's spark offensively can't keep the Timberwolves competitive at the point guard spot.

2. Kevin Love: Kevin Love is still playing like an MVP candidate. While Rubio did help him get better looks on offense, Love's rebounding will not be affected by Rubio's loss. Love still has enough creativity and versatility on offense to score consistently. In addition, his confidence must have been boosted by his victory in the three point contest. While he shouldn't be settling for an outside shot too often, he will have greater confidence shooting the ball. Minnesota shouldn't be scared of a drop in production from Love. After all, he had 31 points and 16 rebounds in his first game without Rubio.

3. The Strength of Their Schedule: Compared to the schedules of their competition, the Timberwolves' schedule is easy. While Minnesota plays 11 teams under .500, the Mavericks play six teams under .500. In a shortened season, five games can make a huge difference. If Minnesota takes advantage of these wins, they can finish with a slightly better record than Dallas.

4. Rebounding- Rebounding and defense win games. The Timberwolves are definitely halfway there. They are third in the league in rebounding, which is as big a factor as Rubio's passing. Rubio's absence shouldn't hurt the team in rebounding, which will allow them to pull out wins based solely on dominating the boards.

So, while Rubio definitely hurts the Timberwolves, there is still a realistic chance for them to make the playoffs.
