2012 NFL Mock Draft: Full First-Round Predictions with Video Highlights
The first two picks of the NFL draft are set, and both Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are dreams to watch operate at the college level.
However, with so much hype on the quarterbacks, fans may not be seeing as much of the other players rounding out the first round.
In an effort to fill that void, here are some highlight reels for every player that I am projecting to go in the first round.
1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, Stanford QB
1 of 32There are numerous clips of Andrew Luck's passing acumen floating around the web, and rightly so, as the young QB is one of the most sought-after prospects at the position in years.
Here is an example of the all-around athleticism that Luck possesses highlighted in this snot-bubbling hit that almost returns the ball to Stanford.
The fact of the matter is that even Peyton Manning served up a lot of turnovers in his rookie year and Luck will be no different in that regard. What is different between the two is that Luck will make defenders think twice about trying to make something out of their interception.
2. Washington Redskins (From St. Louis): Robert Griffin III, Baylor QB
2 of 32Any quarterback with legs can elude the pass rush, but Robert Griffin III is piquing everyone's interest because he has an unusually accurate and strong arm to complement that mobility.
The Redskins are out of the Manning sweepstakes and in an effort to save face, the Redskins went out and pulled the trigger on a huge deal with St. Louis.
This isn't just a pretty play; it's a pretty play on the grandest of Big 12 stages against a perennial powerhouse in Oklahoma. This is what makes the Redskins feel like RGIII is worth all the picks it took to get him.
3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, USC OT
3 of 32I have said it before: Were it not for the quarterback-driven intrigue in this draft, Matt Kalil would be talked about more as the can't-miss prospect that he is.
Speed, strength, footwork and more make Kalil an immediate starter and possibly Pro Bowler early in his NFL career.
Adrian Peterson and Christian Ponder will be on the IR a lot less with Kalil blocking for them.
4. Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, Alabama RB
4 of 32The Cleveland Browns can find a game changer at another position besides RGIII at QB, and he might be good enough to unleash the potential that some still see in Colt McCoy, or be the complement to Matt Flynn.
Richardson can hit holes, shake defenders and find the end zone after a big play, which is the type of deal closing that the Browns have been missing.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, LSU CB
5 of 32Watch enough tape of Morris Claiborne and it almost appears that he is running the route that the receiver had called for him in the huddle.
It's clear that his route recognition combined with his athleticism makes him an impact player at the corner position.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers can use a lock-down cover like that as they attempt to regain their championship form.
6. St. Louis Rams (From Washington): Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma St. WR
6 of 32To put it simply: Justin Blackmon is a touchdown machine on the outside.
Sam Bradford desperately needs a player who can take a well-placed slant pass to the house at any moment.
It's imperative to Jeff Fisher's new offense that they invest in the future of Bradford and the offense by selecting a player who has a penchant for what you see above.
7 Jacksonville Jaguars: Michael Floyd, Notre Dame WR
7 of 32The Jacksonville Jaguars—more importantly Blaine Gabbert—just need to keep offensive possessions going long enough to find a rhythm.
As evidenced above, Floyd is a catching machine and rarely lets anything escape his grasp.
Adding Floyd to MJD and Gabbert can turn Jacksonville into a serviceable offense for Mike Mularkey to work with.
8. Miami Dolphins: David DeCastro, Stanford OG
8 of 32The Miami Dolphins will look to add beef to their offensive line to help Reggie Bush and whoever is playing quarterback keep this offense on track.
DeCastro is the top-ranked interior lineman in the draft and has equal experience pounding the ball and protecting a future legend at quarterback in Andrew Luck during his time at Stanford.
9. Carolina Panthers: Michael Brockers, LSU DT
9 of 32Watching Brockers work makes it abundantly apparent that he is a physically gifted freak in the middle of the defensive line.
Carolina needs a presence in the middle to help solidify their defense so that the team can get Cam Newton on the field as much as possible.
10. Buffalo Bills: Riley Reiff, Iowa OT
10 of 32For better or worse, the Buffalo Bills have hitched their wagons to Ryan Fitzpatrick and in 2012, they must go about protecting him.
Behind Matt Kalil, Reiff is the strongest prospect at tackle and will help shore up an offensive line that will be asked to give Fitzpatrick plenty of time to work.
11. Kansas City Chiefs: Jonathan Martin, Stanford OG
11 of 32If the Chiefs decide to roll with Matt Cassel or maybe land the big fish in Peyton Manning, protection is going to be a high priority.
Throw into the mix the fact that Jamaal Charles is returning from injury, and the need to have big bodies in front of their offensive stars is a must for Kansas City.
The defense was resurgent for Kansas City down the stretch. That will allow them to utilize this pick to help the offense.
12. Seattle Seahawks: Dre' Kirkpatrick, Alabama CB
12 of 32Many haven't noticed, but the Seahawks have a very exciting young group of players in their secondary. Adding Kirkpatrick to the mix could get them ready to become one of the NFL's elite before long.
His willingness to hit as well as cover will make him a strong addition to a team that faces some grinders in the NFC West.
13. Arizona Cardinals: Quinton Coples, UNC DE
13 of 32The Cardinals already have Calais Campbell terrorizing quarterbacks, but adding Coples would give them two dominant rushers creating a "pick your poison" scenario for opposing teams.
This clip is nice, but Coples has really improved his draft stock through the Senior Bowl and combine as well.
14. Dallas Cowboys: Alfonzo Dennard, Nebraska CB
14 of 32The Cowboys need a youth movement in their secondary. They need players who an cover the pass and help with the punishing running games in the NFC East.
Dennard comes from a strong defensive pedigree at Nebraska and could become Rob Ryan's new favorite weapon.
15. Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Kuechly, Boston College ILB
15 of 32The Philadelphia Eagles have got the pass rush taken care of with Jason Babin, but what they need is a strong presence inside that does nothing but tackle.
Luke Kuechly is a tackling machine, with over 190 combined tackles in 2011. He will provide much-needed support to a struggling Eagles defense.
16. New York Jets: Nick Perry, USC DE
16 of 32Rex Ryan has struck out looking for pass-rushers in the past, but the smart money says that Perry is a much safer bet and more explosive than other picks that Ryan has made.
Perry's speed is evident in these clips. That kind of pressure can continue to help the Jets' pressure defense thrive on turnovers.
17. Cincinnati Bengals: Courtney Upshaw, Alabama DE
17 of 32If the Bengals had gotten more pressure on T.J. Yates in their playoff game, then the roles might have been reversed and Cincinnati's miracle season might have continued.
The Bengals have a chance to make two impact selections in this year's first round. Beginning with a player who will elevate the effectiveness of the defense is a perfect start.
18. San Diego Chargers: Fletcher Cox, Mississippi State, DT
18 of 32The resurgence of the rushing game in every AFC West city but San Diego means that the Chargers need to shore up their interior defensive line.
Cox brings a nice mix of size and athleticism to the defense and should help shut down dynamic rushing threats like Darren McFadden, Jamaal Charles and Tim Tebow.
19. Chicago Bears: Mohamed Sanu, Rutgers WR
19 of 32One look at this catch and Jay Cutler would tell the Bears' new front office to turn off the films and draft Sanu immediately.
He has long frame and great hands that are perfect for the fun-and-gun game that Cutler likes to employ through the air in Chicago.
20. Tennessee Titans: Melvin Ingram, South Carolina DE
20 of 32Melvin Ingram is a real "do-it-all" kind of player out of South Carolina, as evidenced by the highlights above. Interceptions, sacks and even a turn on the hands team for an onside kick is an impressive resume for a potential draftee.
The Titans need a physical freak on defense that harkens back to the days when Jevon Kearse was "The Freak" for the Titans.
21. Cincinnati Bengals: Cordy Glenn, Georgia OG/OT
21 of 32The next step for the Bengals in their continued pursuit of the AFC North title and playoff victories is to try and protect their franchise quarterback, Andy Dalton, a little better.
Cordy Glenn was impressive in all facets of the game at the combine and in the Senior Bowl. He will be a staple of the offensive unit in Cincy for years to come.
22. Cleveland Browns: Stephon Gilmore, South Carolina CB
22 of 32Speed is a serious weapon in the defensive backfield and the Browns are in the market for it.
A player like Gilmore, from South Carolina, may be the most explosive CB in the draft and it shows in his coverage ability. The Browns will address two big needs in the first round of 2012's draft with these high profile SEC stars.
23. Detroit Lions: Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama CB
23 of 32Here is a video of Janoris Jenkins taking on the best that the SEC had to offer before he ran into trouble and had to transfer to North Alabama.
The Detroit Lions are showing that they don't mind having players who live "on the edge." Jenkins will provide some much-needed coverage ability to their blossoming dominant defense.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jerel Worthy, Michigan State DL
24 of 32It's not that the Steelers lacked depth this season, but their depletion from injury showed their age at certain positions, which in time will severely threaten their depth and continued defensive dominance.
Jerel Worthy has the size to stand in the place of a force like Casey Hampton and the agility to keep up with the linebacking corps in Pittsburgh.
25. Denver Broncos: Dont'a Hightower, Alabama MLB
25 of 32The Denver Broncos just got some bad news regarding D.J. Williams that may spell the end of his tenure in Denver, thus making linebacker a serious position of need in Denver.
Drafting Hightower might allow Denver to retain Joe Mays and move him out to Williams' abandoned post and keep the defense stabilized. Watching Hightower should make Denver fans happy about Denver's ability to stop the run in the future.
26. Houston Texans: Kendall Wright, Baylor WR
26 of 32The position of No. 1 threat in Houston is firmly held by Andre Johnson, but adding Kendall Wright to the mix will make the Texans offense as explosive as any in the league.
No matter if it's Matt Schaub, Matt Leinart or T.J. Yates slinging it to him, Wright can make yards after the catch.
27. New England Patriots (From New Orleans): Dontari Poe, Memphis DT
27 of 32This video and Poe's performance at the combine could rocket his draft status above this spot, but if he is still around, Bill Belichick will likely not pass on a talent like this.
Pairing Poe with Vince Wilfork will make the interior of the Patriots defense almost impenetrable for opposing offenses.
28. Green Bay Packers: Zebrie Sanders, Florida St. OT
28 of 32Injuries to the offensive line were not the total downfall of the Packers in the postseason, but it was a constant problem for the Pack this season.
Depth is always something that good teams are looking for, and at this point in the draft the Packers just need to add some depth to the immense talent that they have and hope they are better prepared for the postseason next year.
29. Baltimore Ravens: Whitney Mercilus, Illinois DE
29 of 32Defense is still king in Baltimore, but names like Ray Lewis and even Terrell Suggs are not getting any younger. The Ravens need to start restocking the cupboard if they intend to keep their defense at an elite level.
Mercilus is immensely athletic and will fit in perfectly with the Ravens immediately and soon will help to carry the mantle of stout defense in Baltimore once the legends have moved on.
30. San Francisco 49ers: Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina WR
30 of 32The 49ers are talking to Randy Moss, amongst others to fill the void that they have at wide receiver.
A better solution for the 49ers will be to draft a playmaker at the position and bring him along in the offense. If the play above becomes a regular occurrence in San Francisco, they could be Super Bowl ready by next year.
31. New England Patriots: Mark Barron, Alabama SS
31 of 32It was made clear on February 5 that a great offense must have a solid defense behind it to achieve the ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl.
Tom Brady will always have the New England offense ready to contend, but upgrades need to be made on defense for the Patriots to reclaim the championship. Mark Barron is an intelligent and athletic safety who will make an impact immediately in New England.
32. New York Giants: Zach Brown, North Carolina OLB
32 of 32Brown didn't wow the scouts in the Senior Bowl, but his athleticism is apparent and the New York Giants always make a home for impact defensive players.
The offense seems to be in good shape for next year, but free agency could steal some contributors from the Giants' championship defense, which will make room for a player like Zach Brown.
