NFL Draft: Time for Change
Amos JonesFeb 25, 2008
I am probably one of the few people that you will hear of that loves the NFL combine and the NFL draft.
I like to see the new guys that are dreaming of playing in the NFL go through the drills and workouts as they prepare for the NFL draft.
It is also exciting to hear about the speeds some run in the 40-yard dash and how they do on the physiological exams.
The NFL draft is anything but an exact science. It would seem that as you watch a player mature in college, it would translate to NFL success, but that is not always the case.
In the NFL, the game is much faster and players are much bigger and stronger. Many draft picks seem to never find their niche in the NFL, due in some part to learning playbooks and in some part all of the time and energy that is required to perform at such a high level.
The NFL draft was designed to allow the weakest teams, based on their record, to choose the best players, or if they chose to not take a particular player, to gather a bunch of players to get better in a hurry via a trade.
Some of the better teams could also trade up for a better draft pick, but that could be a thing of the past. In today's NFL, with all of the agents and greedy players, it is almost impossible for a team to put so much money into just one player, which isn't good for the NFL.
A team could draft a stud that gets hurt in his first year, or he could just be a terrible player. It won't matter because if he has a guaranteed salary of 29 million dollars, it could kill your chances of getting more players with the salary cap the NFL has in place.
The NFL has always been based on balance between the teams. In any year in the past, a team could go from worst to first, unlike other sports.
I predict that the NFL Draft will change after this year in order to give every team a chance to change their fortunes around in a hurry.
The NFL needs to learn it isn't always about the money, but the game on the field.
We deserve the right as NFL fans to get the best product on the field.
If your team is one of the ones that has the best of the best, it is great. If your team is in the cellar every year, however, it stinks!
I thank goodness my team cares enough about its fans to put the best product they can field each year.
