Boston Celtics Trade Rumors: Michael Beasley Would Give Team Rebuilding Boost

Timothy RappMar 1, 2012

Will Rajon Rondo stay or be traded? Will any or all of the Big Three be moved? Will the Celtics stay together and try to add a piece or two for one last playoff run?

Will the team look to retool, rebuild or die a slow and painful death?

My guess is the team will look to retool and move any combination of Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. And one of the first pieces they will look to bring back in the retooling phase will be the young and talented, though perhaps immature, Michael Beasley.

We get the Beasley to the Celtics rumor from Sam Amico of FOX Sports:

"

According to multiple FOX Sports Ohio sources, the Wolves have already spoken with New Jersey, Houston and the L.A. Lakers about Beasley. While both teams are said to still be open to a deal, it appears Beasley's most likely landing spot, for the time being, is Boston.

The Celtics visited Cleveland on Tuesday, and the majority of the talk centered around a deal that would send center Jermaine O'Neal to Minnesota for Beasley. O'Neal is solid, but often-injured, causing some to wonder why the Wolves would be interested in such a deal.

However, the salaries match, and O'Neal's $6.2 million comes off the books at season's end.

"

I know not everyone likes Beasley, but I think he's a young player with a ton of potential who adds great value, especially if the Celtics could get him for Jermaine O'Neal.

I believe the Celtics will look to move at least Ray Allen for some young pieces before the trade deadline. (Shameless plug alert: I wrote about that very topic, which you can read here!)

If I were the Celtics, I would start my retooling effort by holding onto Rondo and Pierce (let him finish his career in Boston), bringing in Beasley and seeing if I could land young players or draft picks in trades for Allen and Garnett.

It sucks how quickly this team got old, but retooling now will be far better than having to undergo a full rebuild this offseason. Get something for the old guys while you can, Boston, and bring in Beasley on the cheap.

It's a move in the right direction.
