Jamal Crawford, Antawn Jamison and 10 Aging Scorers Having Mid-Season Resurgence
They say age ain't nothin' but a number. Have you ever noticed that it's young people who always say that?
That's not really true, especially if you're an NBA player who has logged some serious mileage over the course of your career. Until you've gotten to the point in life where it's easier to identify the parts of your body that don't hurt, you just don't know.
These guys have gotten there. They've taken a while to get going, but they're hitting their strides now. These are the top scorers over 30 who have seen their scoring go up in February.
Kevin Garnett
1 of 10The Boston Celtics might be struggling, but don't blame that on the 35-year-old Kevin Garnett.
In January he averaged 14.1 points per game ad shot .473. In February he's shooting .541 and scoring 16.0 points as well as 8.9 rebounds per game.
Remember when his nickname was "The Kid"?
Jamal Crawford
2 of 10In January, the Portland Trailblazers guard averaged 13.1 points and 3.6 assists on .371 shooting. Since then he's been shooting .431, including .424 from deep for 16.0 points and 4.7 dimes per game.
The increase in production has seen him installed in the starting lineup over the struggling Raymond Felton.
Tim Duncan
3 of 10Tim Duncan's career was supposed to be all but over. Yet, somehow he's been finding a resurgence of late. He's been slow getting things going, but he keeps getting better.
In December he averaged 9.0 points per game. In January he averaged 13.8. In February he's raised those numbers to 16.2.
He's also grabbing 10.9 rebounds a game this month. Think that might have something to do with the Spurs recent red-hot play (discounting last night when they essentially rested the starters and forfeited the game)?
Jason Richardson
4 of 10Jason Richardson has been having a sensational month, even if it's going unnoticed. In January he averaged 9.6 points. In February he's averaging 16.3 points per game. He's also shooting an outright ridiculous .525 per game.
Not too shabby for a 31-year-old.
Carlos Boozer
5 of 10When Derrick Rose went down with a bad back, Carlos Boozer was asked to pick up the slack and he did so. He boosted his scoring from 15.1 points to 16.8 points. He was shooting .521 prior to February he has been shooting .555 since then.
Boozer has also boosted his assists from 1.6 to 2.2.
Drew Gooden
6 of 10Drew Gooden might not be the biggest star in the NBA, but he's really elevated his game since Andrew Bogut went down. Gooden is averaging 17.0 points per game and 6.7 rebounds filling in for the Bucks center.
That's a huge bump from the 10.9 points he was scoring in January.
Pau Gasol
7 of 10With all the attention regarding his being traded, Gasol has been playing outstanding in the month of February, a fact which is getting lost. In fact, if you look at total stats (points plus rebounds and assists), he has been the most productive player over 30 in the month of February.
His 17.3 points per game is fourth best and is an improvement over his 16.1 in January. He's also averaging nearly four more rebounds more than January, with an increase from 9.8 to 13.5.
Antawn Jamison
8 of 10Antawn Jamison had a huge month as Anderson Varejao has been hurt. His scoring was 15.0 points per game in January and he's been hitting for 22.0 points per game in the month of February.
He's also grabbing 8.7 rebounds per game and, along with Kyrie Irving, is keeping the Cavaliers in contention for a postseason spot.
Dirk Nowitzki
9 of 10Dirk Nowitzki had a horrible start to the season until he took some time off to get his legs back. In January he averaged just 15.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, shooting .441.
During the month of February, he's averaging 23.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game and he's shooting .467.
Looks like he found his legs.
Dwyane Wade
10 of 10Dwyane Wade struggled through the early part of the season. He had some foot injuries that were limiting him and he wasn't playing up to the usual Wade standards. He's "only" averaged 20.3 points on .431 shooting.
In February he's averaging 24.8 points per game. He's averaging 4.5 more points and taking nearly one fewer attempt. His field-goal percentage is an outstanding .568.
The Heat were winning while he was out, experiencing the "agony of de-feet" and it was worth it for the Heat. He's healthy now and as such, he's playing like it.
