Derrick Rose: Chicago Bulls' Star Point Guard Must Sit out All-Star Game
So far this season, Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose has missed nine games due to a toe problem and, now more recently, back issues.
Hopefully, on February 26 he makes that number an even 10.
No, that's not just because I'm a mean fan rooting against the Bulls, it's because that is the day of the All-Star Game, and there's actually a possibility Rose participates.
According to ESPN, "Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, who will coach the Eastern Conference All-Stars, said Wednesday he'll wait until the Feb. 26 game draws near before deciding whether point guard Derrick Rose will play."
I'm just wondering why this is even being discussed at all. Let's break it down.
Pros of Derrick Rose playing in the All-Star Game
Well, if he plays, he represents the Chicago Bulls on a national scale as one of the best players in the league. But, I think—and maybe this is just me—he pretty much gained national acclaim when he won the MVP award last season.
But sure, if you're a Chicago fan, it's nice to see that Bulls uniform in the All-Star Game. I get that.
Oh, and also, if the East wins, Rose's Bulls might get home-court advantage in the Fina—wait, no. That's not this sport, is it?
An All-Star Game MVP looks nice on the resume, but I'm guessing that even if Rose does play, Tom Thibodeau won't play him enough to accomplish that.
Cons of Derrick Rose playing in the All-Star Game
I'd say the possibility of him further injuring himself in a game that doesn't matter is a pretty big con. The Bulls are a lock for the playoffs and they just need their star to get to 100 percent some time before the postseason begins.
All-Star Weekend is a good time to rest up.
That's really the only "con," but I'd say the risk of Rose hurting himself even more severely out-weighs the pros.
While we're at it, Thibodeau should probably keep Luol Deng and his fractured wrist out, as well.
