NBA Rumors: Why Orlando Makes No Sense for J.R. Smith

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

J.R. Smith's return from China has made him the most valuable commodity available recently. And for some strange reason, Smith is considering a move to Orlando.

Consider the following, from Eric Pincus of HoopsWorld:

"

While players cannot always be taken by their word on their Twitter feeds, guard J.R. Smith has six teams listed on his profile:  New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers and Magic.

True story. Pincus adds the following:

"

While the Magic already have two shooting guards in Jason Richardson and J.J. Redick, they also have the advantage over most suitors with about $4.9 million of their Mid-Level Exception (MLE) still available.

Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team cannot use their full MLE to climb to $4 million over the luxury tax. Currently the Magic are under; any investment in Smith would put Orlando above the threshold.

"

So Smith would create a logjam at shooting guard in Orlando and would willingly come to a team that might be losing Dwight Howard at the trade deadline?

How does that make any sense?

Let me answer that one: It doesn't! It makes no sense whatsoever.

I get his interest in the Knicks or Clippers, playoff-bound teams where he'll receive plenty of playing time. I don't see the Lakers willing to take on Smith with another player who has had character concerns in the past, Metta World Peace, already on the roster. The Bulls and Pacers seem like longshots, at best.

And again, J.R. Smith to the Magic doesn't make any sense. What would Orlando's pitch be, come to us because we might lose one of the best players in the NBA soon?

What would Smith's pitch be, hey, you guys could really use another player on the wing?

Smith to the Clippers makes the most sense. Mark it down.
