Lakers Trade Ideas: Ramon Sessions Is Better Upgrade Than Gilbert Arenas

Nicholas GossJun 4, 2018

The Los Angeles Lakers need to upgrade at the point guard position, and trading for Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ramon Sessions would be a much better move than signing free agent guard Gilbert Arenas.

The Lakers are reportedly interested in Arenas, according to the Los Angeles Times, with Kobe Bryant publicly backing the move as well, but for now and going forward, the better option is acquiring Sessions from Cleveland.

For starters, Arenas doesn't play any defense, and was never a good defender in his younger days either. He also is not close to the caliber of a scoring threat he once was.

Arenas' 10.8 points and 2.7 assists per game averages last season were the lowest of his career, and since he's not played yet this season, he won't be in real basketball game shape.

Arenas is a decent short-term fix, and the Lakers would be better off signing him then doing nothing to address their weakness at point guard, but why not make a short- and long-term fix by trading for Sessions?

The Cavaliers guard is only 25 years old and can not only pass and be an effective playmaker, he can score consistently too.

Sessions is also a very good free throw shooter, and has improved his percentage from the foul line by about seven percent this season over his career average.

With veteran point guard Derek Fisher not playing well, especially offensively, the Lakers need to find a long term replacement for him, and not find something to help them just this season.

Sessions is better than Arenas and would be a fantastic addition to the Lakers, who might be an upgrade at point guard away from being a legitimate NBA Finals contender again.
