Floyd Mayweather Tweet About Jeremy Lin Highlights Twitter Backlash
Jeremy Lin is the feel-good story of the year in the NBA, but of course this hasn’t stopped haters from attacking the young man and trying to tear down his accomplishments.
Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather led the charge, openly mocking Lin’s accomplishments because he is an Asian American.
Mayweather is no stranger to racist comments against those of Asian descent, having called Filipino rival Manny Pacquiao a “little yellow chump” and saying “we’re going to cook him with some cats and dogs.”
His ignorant comments weren’t the only ones against Lin to be disseminated via Twitter.
Jason Whitlock, a national sportswriter for Foxsports.com, delivered a stereotypical barb at the New York Knicks point guard.
He’s since “apologized” for his remark, but the fact that a columnist with an opinion that is supposed to be respected and knowledgeable when concerning basketball said such a thing is just awful.
Those are just two examples of famous people with a platform to speak on delivering horribly racist messages to millions of people.
That doesn’t mean the common man hasn’t embraced the use of stereotypes and racial undertones to deride the accomplishments of Lin.
Tony Markovich and Ralph Warner did a piece for Complex Sports, gathering some of the most ridiculous nicknames people have created for the sensational young PG on Twitter.
He was called the “Jackie Chan of Basketball," the “Great Fried Rice Hype," “Air Dumpling," “Fortune Rookie” and many more.
It’s ridiculous that so many people are openly stereotyping a player and drawing comparisons to other sports, foods and parts of Asian culture that have nothing to do with his play on the court.
Hopefully our country grows up and realizes this type of casual racism isn’t acceptable anymore and Lin helps us to realize it.
