Eric BallMay 31, 2018
Ever since 30 for 30 provided us with some of the best sports documentaries of the last decade, ESPN has been churning out compelling stories that have been must-see TV.
The next documentary on tap looks like it will fit the mold.
“The Announcement,” set to appear on ESPN Sunday, March 11th, is a piece that will revolve around Magic Johnson and the story of a basketball star dealing with the HIV virus.
Judging from the recently released trailer, it’s going to be incredibly emotional. Magic had won multiple championships while maintaining a level of likability that was unmatched in the 1980s. NBA fans hate him on the floor, but couldn’t help but respect him off it.
Then one of the most unforgettable moments of the last 30 years occurred when he told the world he had contracted the HIV virus. It was one of those moments where you will always remember where you were at the time and as a direct result a nation was forced to learn about the deadly disease. It was an unprecedented sports story.
At the time it was looked at as a disease for poor people and low-life’s, now a rich star was coping with it. Magic’s announcement and subsequent time and money he put forth the raise awareness completely changed the way Americans viewed the disease.
The documentary will take a look at the impact it had on Magic, the NBA, and pop culture in general. It’s going to be emotional. It’s going to be informative. It’s going to be must-see TV.
Can’t wait for March 11th.
