Randy Moss Is Back, Could We See Him with the New York Jets?

Anthony ForteJun 7, 2018

Randy Moss announced on Monday that he is ready for a return to the NFL. He is back and ready to catch passes after taking a year off in 2011.

After a putrid performance in 2010, where Moss set career lows in every major receiving category, he decided to call it a career. It was speculated almost immediately that he would return for the 2011 season, potentially with the Philadelphia "dream team" Eagles, but those plans never came to light.

But now he is back. And what team better to speculate him coming to than the New York Jets?

The Jets enter the 2012 season with a question mark at No. 2 receiver. With Plaxico Burress almost as good as gone, reportedly telling people he wants to go and play for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Jets will need to sign or draft a wide receiver to play on the outside.

They need a receiver that can stretch the field and come up with clutch grabs—Moss can be that guy.

Moss, even in his worst season was still able to make cornerbacks fear for their lives in deep zone coverage. He was still able to get separation on corners—less than in the past but separation nevertheless—and the Jets need that.

It also helps that Rex Ryan mentioned last offseason that Randy Moss was a great vertical receiver, raving about him to the point where many analysts speculated the Jets would make an offer for the future Hall of Famer.

If Ryan likes him, and the Jets need a receiver; it could be an option.

The Jets have tried to get players to fit Rex's system in the past. Most have been on the defensive side of the ball, but that doesn't mean they won't want to get more of the head coach's opinion about players the team can use on offense.

It's important to note that Moss will likely come with a cheaper price tag.

Moss' 2010 season is still fresh in the minds of many teams across the league. The interest in him will not be high—similar to how it was when he retired last season after not being pursued by many teams.

With the Jets up against the salary cap and needing to make smart, cost efficient signings, Moss' low contract might be appealing.

And plus, wouldn't it be cool to add yet another interesting piece into the Patriots-Jets rivalry?

Moss had his most productive season in New England when he broke all-time records as a receiver during the team's 2007 undefeated season. It would be quite interesting to see him lining up against that same Patriots that traded him away to Minnesota.

This article isn't saying that Randy Moss to the Jets is a sure thing. But what it is saying is do not be too surprised if Moss is catching passes from Mark Sanchez in early August training camp drills.
