2012 NFL Mock Draft: Full First Round Predictions with Analysis

Jon DoveJun 7, 2018

My latest mock draft features some changes and a complete second round. It also continues the trend of Robert Griffin III coming off the board in the top three. Of course, his selection means that there's a trade worked into the mock. This trade also has an impact on the second round of the draft.

The upcoming combine will have an impact on how the draft shakes out. Players at the skill positions will see the biggest adjustment in their stock. However, free agency will likely have the biggest impact on how the draft actually shakes up.

No. 1: Indianapolis Colts

1 of 33

Pick: Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Stanford

The Indianapolis Colts know that passing up on selecting Stanford's Andrew Luck isn't an option. His presence in this draft forces them to move on from Peyton Manning and start looking toward the future. However, they are lucky to be able to transition from one top-level quarterback to another.

Adding Luck all but ensures continued success for the Colts franchise.

Baylor's Robert Griffin III continues to make a push to be the top overall pick. He hasn't shied away from challenging Luck and feels he should be in consideration for the Colts. This past week it was announced that Griffin III scheduled his pro day on the same day as Luck.

Griffin III isn't the same level of prospect but offers tremendous upside. It's possible that some evaluators have him rated ahead of Luck. However, I have no doubt that Andrew Luck will be the top overall selection.

No. 2: Washington Redskins (TRADE: From STL)

2 of 33

Pick: Robert Griffin III, Quarterback, Baylor

Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann hit the nail on the head when he said that adding Peyton Manning would be a poor decision. This Washington Redskins franchise needs to find a long-term answer at the position, not just another stop-gap solution.

Making a move to add Baylor's Robert Griffin III is a much better course of action.

Griffin III's combination of athletic ability and strong throwing arm make him an explosive player. His ability to accurately push the ball down the field will help open things up for the Redskins offense. He's an immediate upgrade over last year's starters, Rex Grossman and John Beck, while also providing long-term security.

Moving up to the No. 2 pick will be costly, but it's not everyday that a prospect like Griffin III is available.

No. 3 Minnesota Vikings

3 of 33

Pick: Jonathan Martin, Offensive Tackle, Stanford

The Minnesota Vikings offensive line needs an infusion of talent, especially at the left tackle position. Last year's starter Charlie Johnson is better suited for a backup role. Luckily, Minnesota has a great opportunity to add a franchise left tackle with the No. 3 pick in the 2012 Draft.

Stanford's Jonathan Martin is the type of player who can step in and make an immediate impact.

Martin's strength is his ability to protect the passer, an increasingly more important skill set. His quick feet, balance and fluid movements allow him to mirror all types of pass-rushers. Minnesota needs someone who can provide good protection for their young quarterback, Christian Ponder. His development will heavily depend on the type of pressure he faces.

The Vikings could also consider a defensive back like LSU's Morris Claiborne or a wide receiver like Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon. Both players represent good value at a position of need.

No. 4: Cleveland Browns

4 of 33

Pick: Quinton Coples, Defensive End, North Carolina

North Carolina's Quinton Coples is the top pass-rushing threat in this entire draft class. He combines good length, quickness and power that allows him to get after the quarterback. His good size means that he will lineup at defensive end in a 4-3 system.

Adding Coples to the Cleveland Browns defensive line would give them one of the top units in the entire NFL.

Last season, Cleveland hit two home runs by adding Jabaal Sheard and Phil Taylor through the draft. However, Sheard's strong performance will mean increased double-teams and attention. Finding another defensive end to complement Sheard will help keep him productive.

The Browns are also among the teams considering Baylor's Robert Griffin III. His upside offers Cleveland an opportunity to have a clear answer at the position. However, making a move for Griffin III means that this franchise is ready to move on from Colt McCoy.

No. 5: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

5 of 33

Pick: Morris Claiborne, Cornerback, LSU

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers face a lot of uncertainty in their defensive backfield. Starting cornerbacks Ronde Barber and Aqib Talib both aren't locks to return next season. Barber's age has him considering retirement and Talib's off-the-field issues could incur the wrath of commissioner Roger Goodell.

LSU's Morris Claiborne boasts the skill set needed to immediately make a difference.

Claiborne's toughness, quickness and fluid movements give him the versatility needed to fit multiple schemes. These skills also allow him to lockup on a team's top target and remove him from the game. Shut-down corners like Claiborne impact the play of the entire defense.

New Tampa head coach Greg Schiano puts a lot of attention on finding success on defense. This fact only increases the addition of someone like Claiborne.

No. 6: St. Louis Rams (TRADE: From Wash)

6 of 33

Pick: Matt Kalil, Offensive Tackle, USC

The St. Louis Rams would jump for joy if this is how the draft played out. They trade out of the No. 2 spot, pick up extra picks and still land an elite player. USC's Matt Kalil has the potential to develop into an All-Pro left tackle. His combination of length, athletic ability and toughness makes him an excellent all-around prospect.

Roger Saffold and Jason Smith had disastrous seasons filled with ineffectiveness and injuries. Smith's future with the team may depend on his willingness to take a pay cut. His inability to remain healthy makes him a possible cap casualty.

Adding Kalil gives the Rams a top-level left tackle for the next decade, while also strengthening the right tackle spot. Saffold still has a bright future and could find more success on the right side of the line.

No. 7: Jacksonville Jaguars

7 of 33

Pick: Justin Blackmon, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon made a lot of explosive and game-changing plays in college. His ability to work the underneath routes and attack the deep part of the field makes him a well-rounded player. The Jacksonville Jaguars lack the type of players capable of making a difference on the outside.

Adding Blackmon at this spot fills a need and brings good value.

Jacksonville needs to find a player to help Blaine Gabbert develop as a passer. Blackmon's reliable hands and after the catch ability will make things easier for Gabbert. Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy continuously raves about his work ethic and leadership. This is just another way that he will help the development of Gabbert.

North Carolina's Quinton Coples will also get some heavy consideration with this pick. However, in this mock he's already off the board.

No. 8: Carolina Panthers

8 of 33

Pick: Riley Reiff, Offensive Tackle, Iowa

The Carolina Panthers are still in a rebuilding process, but expectations are higher because of the play of Cam Newton. Surrounding Newton with the pieces needed to continue his development is important for the franchise's long-term success.

Iowa's Riley Reiff boasts the skills needed excel at left tackle for the next decade.

Quarterbacks need playmaking receivers, but they also need to be protected. Adding Reiff helps in the long term but also improves the team in the short term. Jordan Gross still has a hold on the starting left tackle spot but at age 31 is due for a switch to right tackle in the future. Until then, Reiff brings more reliability to the offensive line, as Jeff Otah's continued injury issues have kept him out of the lineup.

Carolina might struggle adding another piece to the offense, as its biggest needs come on the defensive side of the ball. Someone like LSU's Michael Brockers could push his way into the top 10 and into consideration for the Panthers.

No. 9: Miami Dolphins

9 of 33

Pick: Courtney Upshaw, Linebacker, Alabama

Alabama's Courtney Upshaw is a versatile player capable of playing several positions in varying alignments. His combination of size, quickness and toughness makes him a possible fit at defensive end in a 4-3 alignment. However, outside linebacker in a 3-4 system might be where his skills are best utilized.

The Miami Dolphins' new defensive coordinator, Kevin Coyle, plans on using a hybrid attack that makes Upshaw a great addition.

Jason Taylor's retirement leaves a void at one of the linebacker/end positions. However, it's his pass-rushing ability that's the toughest to replace. Upshaw possesses enough quickness to attack the edge and the power needed to collapse the pocket. Adding Upshaw also helps keep double teams away from Cameron Wake.

Miami is one of many teams that must consider making a move up the draft to land Baylor's Robert Griffin III. The Dolphins lack a long-term answer at quarterback, a problem that could be solved by the addition of Griffin III.

No. 10: Buffalo Bills

10 of 33

Pick: Melvin Ingram, Defensive End/ Linebacker, South Carolina

The Buffalo Bills' decision to promote Dave Wannstedt to defensive coordinator means a change in defensive philosophy. This upcoming season Buffalo will employ a 4-3 scheme, which means new pieces must be added. The biggest focus needs to be on adding a pass-rushing defensive end to complement Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams.

South Carolina's Melvin Ingram boasts the speed and quickness needed to get after the quarterback.

Ingram's versatility means that if the Bills decide to switch back to a 3-4 alignment, this won't be a wasted pick. His athleticism helped him make a major impact this past season, while also improving his draft stock. He's able to get after the quarterback because of his quickness and non-stop motor.

Buffalo should be willing to make a move up the draft in order to land North Carolina's Quinton Coples. He's a much more polished pass-rusher and a better fit at defensive end.

No. 11: Kansas City Chiefs

11 of 33

Pick: David DeCastro, Guard, Stanford

Todd Haley may no longer be the head coach, but that doesn't mean we will see much change in Kansas City. Most of Haley's staff remains as does top decision-maker Scott Pioli. This lack of a shakeup means we should see a similar draft plan.

Stanford's David DeCastro fits what this team wants to do on the offensive side of the ball. His ability to move defenders off the line and open running lanes will allow Kansas City to continue to feature the run.

The Chiefs' current starters along the interior of the offensive line just aren't getting the job done. In order to successfully run the ball a team needs to consistently win in the trenches. Adding DeCastro helps insure more movement at the line of scrimmage.

Alabama's Trent Richardson is still on the board and could receive a lot of attention from the Chiefs. However, this could also be a potential trade spot for a team looking to move up and land Richardson.

No. 12: Seattle Seahawks

12 of 33

Pick: Trent Richardson, Running Back, Alabama

Alabama's Trent Richardson is a rare prospect who's capable of changing the dynamic of an offense. His ability to run between the tackles, break off a long run and contribute in the passing game means he never needs to leave the field.

The Seattle Seahawks have Marshawn Lynch but the NFL's move to a two-back system means adding Richardson wouldn't be a waste.

Lynch's past few seasons have been excellent, but the "beast mode" will eventual take its toll. The shelf life of a running back is only a handful of years and having a long-term solution isn't a bad idea. Richardson's addition makes sense for both the short and long term.

Seattle would also target some help on the defensive side of the ball. A defensive lineman like LSU's Michael Brockers boasts the versatility to fit Pete Carrol's scheme.

No. 13: Arizona Cardinals

13 of 33

Pick: Mike Adams, Offensive Tackle, Ohio State

The Arizona Cardinals offensive line surrendered 54 sacks last season, which was the second worst in the league. Left tackle Levi Brown doesn't have the ability to consistently reach the edge and protect the passer.

Ohio State's Mike Adams possesses the foot speed and balance needed to play left tackle in the NFL. His addition will allow Brown to shift to the right side, effectively improve two spots along the line.

Improving the pass protection will help Kevin Kolb live up to the price of his addition. The pressure and hits suffered by Kolb forced him out of the lineup several times this season. He still has the abilities to succeed in the NFL but needs better protection to help with his development.

Rumors are swirling that Arizona will make a play for Peyton Manning. He likely won't consider the Cardinals unless they vow to make major upgrades along the offensive line.

No. 14: Dallas Cowboys

14 of 33

Pick: Dre Kirkpatrick, Cornerback, Alabama

The inconsistent play of Terrence Newman and Mike Jenkins was one of the major reasons the Dallas Cowboys failed to reach the playoffs. Both players carry a heavy price tag that could mean the end of their run in Dallas. Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick would be both an immediate upgrade and the long-term answer at the position.

Kirkpatrick's physical play and length makes him a good candidate to play man coverage in the NFL. Rob Ryan's preference to run a blitz-heavy system means that the cornerbacks are often left on an island. Kirkpatrick will be able to play close to the line and make it tough for the offense to find timing.

Dallas may be aggressive and move up to land LSU's Morris Claiborne, who has more upside than Kirkpatrick.

No. 15: Philadelphia Eagles

15 of 33

Pick: Luke Kuechly, Linebacker, Boston College

Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly's ability to quickly diagnosis information helps put him in position to make plays. His instincts and football IQ will allow him to immediate contend for the team lead in tackles.

The Philadelphia Eagles need to add someone capable of providing leadership and consistency to the linebacking corps. Kuechly instantly becomes the Eagles' best linebacker and a leader in the locker room.

Andy Reid has avoided addressing the linebacker position for a number of years, preferring to bring in late-round talent. However, this decision caught up with him this season as the Eagles missed the playoffs thanks in part to the play of the linebackers. Reid must make adding Kuechly or a free-agent linebacker an offseason priority.

There are some rumors that the Eagles may shop DeSean Jackson during the offseason. If they move their explosive wide receiver, finding another one in the draft would be a priority. Baylor's Kendall Wright would be a good fit in Reid's system.

No. 16: New York Jets

16 of 33

Pick: Alshon Jeffery, Wide Receiver, South Carolina

The New York Jets have a lot of work to do this offseason, including the possibility of having to replace Plaxico Burress. New York added Burress to give Mark Sanchez a big target capable of making plays in the red zone. Losing Burress will force the Jets to find another wide receiver with size like South Carolina's Alshon Jeffery.

Adding Jeffery also gives New York a long-term option if it decides to move on from Santonio Holmes at some point in the future.  However, the biggest question facing the Jets is the future of Mark Sanchez. His well-documented struggles have many Jets fans calling for the team to add Peyton Manning.

No matter who the starting quarterback is, they will need playmakers at wide receiver.

No. 17: Cincinnati Bengals (from OAK)

17 of 33

Pick: Stephon Gilmore, Cornerback, South Carolina

The Cincinnati Bengals got surprising strong play from Nate Clements and Adam Jones but neither is the long-term solution. Andy Dalton and A.J. Green get a lot of the credit for the Bengals' playoff run, but it's the play of the defense that lead the way.

South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore will help ensure the defense continues to play at a high level.

Gilmore's quickness, ball skills and physical style of play makes him one of the top defensive players available. It also makes scheme-versatile, increasing his overall value. Adding Gilmore opposite Leon Hall helps take the sting away from losing Johnathan Joseph two years ago.

Cincinnati figures to be one of the teams who could make a strong run at Alabama's Trent Richardson. His addition will add another young playmaker on the offensive side of the ball. However, the Bengals may need to be aggressive if they want to add his services.

No. 18: San Diego Chargers

18 of 33

Pick: Cordy Glenn, Offensive Line, Georgia

The San Diego Chargers offensive line figures to face a lot of turnover this offseason. Marcus McNeill is expected to be let go, which will leave a big hole at the left tackle slot. McNeill, Kris Dielman and Nick Hardwick all could be gone next season.

Georgia's Cordy Glenn possesses the versatility that could allow him to fill any spot along the line.

Glenn used his week at the Senior Bowl to show he can hold up at left tackle. For his size, he has quick feet and good change of direction. This helps him protect the quarterback by mirroring rushers and reacting to counter moves.

If San Diego wants to get back to the playoffs, it needs to ensure Philip Rivers is protected.

No. 19: Chicago Bears

19 of 33

Pick: Michael Floyd, Wide Receiver, Notre Dame

It seems very unlikely that the Chicago Bears make it through the offseason without adding a playmaking receiver with size. The departure of Mike Martz and Jerry Angelo means that the Bears are likely to see a change of philosophy.

Notre Dame's Michael Floyd is the type of playmaker this team has lacked for many years.

Floyd's size and quickness allows him to make plays down the field and over the middle. His leaping ability makes him an excellent red-zone target. Jay Cutler will be very thankful to finally have a wide receiver with No. 1 potential.

If the Bears decide to add a wide receiver via free agency, they could target a cornerback at this position. South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore would be a great fit in Lovie Smith's Cover 2 system.

No. 20: Tennessee Titans

20 of 33

Pick: Kendall Wright, Wide Receiver, Baylor

The Tennessee Titans offense lacks great playmakers at the wide receiver position. Kenny Britt's off-the-field issues make him unreliable and always on the verge of a suspension. Baylor's Kendall Wright possesses the quickness to help open up the Titans' offensive attack. He excels at stretching the field and making explosive plays.

His addition helps in the short term but more importantly gives Tennessee a young target for Jake Locker to develop along side. The presence of Locker puts them in an interesting position as they are trying to win now but also looking toward the future.

Head coach Mike Munchak's past as a Hall of Fame offensive lineman means that he puts a lot of value on winning in the trenches. This could put someone line Penn State's Devon Still in consideration for this spot.

No. 21: Cincinnati Bengals

21 of 33

Pick: Mark Barron, Safety, Alabama

The struggles of Chris Crocker and Reggie Nelson played a major role in the Cincinnati Bengals' early playoff exit. Both players are solid but neither are the long-term solution or provide a lot of upside.

The versatility of Alabama's Mark Barron makes him a great addition to the back end of any defense. His ability to hold up in coverage and support the run makes him a good all-around prospect.

Cincinnati's addition of Stephon Gilmore at No. 17 and Barron here gives the them the playmakers needed to continue its defensive success. The NFL's continued move toward a pass-heavy league makes having a strong secondary necessary.

As I mentioned earlier, the Bengals have to be considered a strong player to add Alabama's Trent Richardson. However, in order to land him they may need to use both of their first-round picks to move up the draft.

No. 22: Cleveland Browns (from ATL)

22 of 33

Pick: Zach Brown, Linebacker, North Carolina

The Cleveland Browns defense is a few pieces away from turning into an elite unit. Earlier in the mock, they added Quinton Coples to help with their pass rush and now have the opportunity to upgrade at the linebacker position.

The athleticism of North Carolina's Zach Brown allows him to make plays from sideline to sideline. Adding a rangy linebacker like Brown will help Cleveland take the next step in its defensive development.

Brown will come in and immediate compete for a starting job against Chris Gocong and Scott Fujita. His athleticism and quickness makes him a four-down player. He's capable of supporting the run and holding up in coverage.

Cleveland has needs on the offensive side of the ball, but should focus on adding the best player available. The Browns might be better suited to address those needs via free agency.

No. 23: Detroit Lions

23 of 33

Pick: Janoris Jenkins, Cornerback, North Alabama

The Detroit Lions have an offense and defensive line capable of taking them to the Super Bowl. However, struggles in the secondary are what ultimately kept them from advancing further this season.

North Alabama's Janoris Jenkins possesses the quickness, fluid hips and ball skills needed to help improve the Lions defense.

Jenkins comes with some off-the-field issues, but that isn't something the Lions typically let affect their draft decisions. He only needs to have some good interviews in order to lessen the concerns about his maturity.

Detroit is committed to adding the best player available, which could change the outcome of its pick. However, it can be argued that Jenkins is the best player available at this point.

No. 24: Pittsburgh Steelers

24 of 33

Pick: Vontaze Burfict, Linebacker, Arizona State

The aging Pittsburgh Steelers defense is in need of some youthful playmakers. Their current starters may only have a few more seasons of top-level production. The middle linebacker spots have James Farrior and Larry Foote, both of whom are over 30 years of age.

Arizona State's Vontaze Burfict would be a great fit in the middle of the Steelers defense.

His maturity concerns become less of an issue because of the leadership in the Pittsburgh locker room. Veterans like Troy Polamalu, James Harrison and Ryan Clark won't allow the youngster to be a distraction. Those character concerns hurt his draft stock but he still possesses top-10 talent. He could end up being one of the steals of the draft.

The Steelers' wide range of needs means they could focus on adding the best player available.

No. 25: Denver Broncos

25 of 33

Pick: Devon Still, Defensive Tackle, Penn State

John Fox's defensive background shows in a lot of his decisions, as he puts heavy focus on adding talent to that side of the ball. The Denver Broncos defense took a major step forward last season and hope to continue to build on that success.

Fox's commitment to Tim Tebow means this team must remain a top-level defensive unit. Penn State's Devon Still boasts the skill set needed to help take this unit to the next level.

Still excels at penetrating the pocket and disrupting the timing of the offense. Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil's outside pressure will provide still plenty of opportunities to make plays behind the line. Adding an interior presence like Still will make it difficult for any offense to limit the push of this defense.

Denver should also be in the market to add a running back. Fox doesn't have any ties to Knowshon Moreno and Willis McGahee, who is over 30 years old, so someone like Boise State's Doug Martin who has experience with zone-read principles could be drafted to fit alongside Tebow.

No. 26: Houston Texans

26 of 33

Pick: Dwayne Allen, Tight End, Clemson

The Houston Texans need to an another playmaking pass-catcher into the mix. Andre Johnson's issues with injuries showed a lack of other options on the roster. Clemson's Dwayne Allen is quick enough to attack the seam and stretch the field. His progress as a blocker makes him a great fit for the Houston Texans' offensive focus.

Allen would replace Owen Daniels, who has struggled to regain his pre-injury form. His addition also gives the Texans a more dangerous two-tight end set. Putting both Daniels and Allen on the field will force defenses to adjust and be unprepared for the quickness of Allen.

Someone like Rutgers' Mohamed Sanu is absolutely in play at this spot. His size and quickness would be a great complement for Johnson.

No. 27: New England Patriots (from NO)

27 of 33

Pick: Michael Brockers, Defensive Line, LSU

LSU's Michael Brockers will be one of the more interesting draft day stories. His production doesn't warrant an early first-round pick, but his potential greatly increases his overall value. He's a versatile player capable of holding at the line and also getting penetration. The New England Patriots would be luckily to add someone of his talent level.

Adding Brockers gives the Patriots options, as they can continue to employ either a 4-3 or 3-4 alignment. This team needs to add the best defensive prospects available with both of their first-round picks. However, they might be better off packaging the picks to move up and add an elite player.

A wide receiver capable of stretching the field is also another option for the Patriots.

No. 28: Green Bay Packers

28 of 33

Pick: Whitney Mercilus, Linebacker/Defensive End, Illinois

The Green Bay Packers' struggles on defense were thanks to the limited production out of their pass-rushers. Clay Matthews faced increased attention that held him to only six sacks this past season.

That type of production isn't going to allow this team to succeed, which is why targeting someone like Illinois' Whitney Mercilus is a good idea.

Picking at No. 28 will give the Packers a few options to upgrade their pass rush. Mercilus boasts the quickness and motor needed to develop into a double-digit sack producer. Adding him opposite Matthews will force teams to game-plan differently.

No. 29: Baltimore Ravens

29 of 33

Pick: Peter Konz, Center, Wisconsin

Baltimore Ravens starting center Matt Birk is contemplating retirement, which would really impact the success of the offense. The Ravens offense is about running the ball and winning in the trenches; without Birk that task becomes more difficult.

Wisconsin's Peter Konz boasts the physical and mental skills needed to immediate step into a starting role.

Even if Birk decides to return for another season, adding Konz would provide security for the future. The Ravens also face the possibility of losing guard Ben Grubbs in free agency. Konz's versatility could allow him to fill in for Grubbs if needed. However, his long-term future is at the center position.

Baltimore could also target a young linebacker like Arizona State's Vontaze Burfict.

No. 30: San Francisco 49ers

30 of 33

Pick: Nick Perry, Linebacker/Defensive End, USC

The San Francisco 49ers face the possibility of losing Ahmad Brooks to free agency. His seven-sack season was the best of his career, which will only increase his popularity. Carlos Rogers and Dashon Goldson are also free agents and will force the 49ers to make decisions.

The pass-rushing ability of USC's Nick Perry would make him a good replacement for Brooks.

Perry's experience is at defensive end, but he possesses the athleticism needed to transition to outside linebacker. The 49ers defense took a step forward this season thanks to the pass rush created by Aldon Smith. Their continued success of the defense depends on a consistent pass rush.

A cornerback or wide receiver also makes sense for the 49ers in the first round. Rutgers' Mohamed Sanu could give them the production they expected out of Braylon Edwards.

No. 31: New England Patriots

31 of 33

Pick: Chandler Jones, Linebacker, Syracuse

Mark Anderson and Andre Carter did a good job this season generating pressure, but neither is the long-term answer. The New England Patriots need to find a young athletic player capable of getting after the quarterback.

Bill Belichick is creative enough to get the most of Syracuse's Chandler Jones as he develops.

Jones' quickness and non-stop motor give him the ability to consistently get after the quarterback. He's still a bit raw but his effort makes him less of a risk. The addition of Jones and Michael Brockers would be a home run draft for the Patriots.

A lot was made of their struggles in the secondary, but adding a top-notch pass rusher will help fix those problems.

No. 32: New York Giants

32 of 33

Pick: Coby Fleener, Tight End, Stanford

Jake Ballard had a nice season for the New York Giants, but his upside is limited and he will start the season on the PUP list most likely after tearing an ACL in the Super Bowl. His limitations make adding a tight end early in the draft a likely scenario.

Stanford's Coby Fleener has the size and quickness needed to develop into a top-level playmaker. The Giants' preference to feature the tight ends makes finding another option a need.

Fleener's experience at Stanford allowed him to develop as a blocker and learn pro-style concepts. New York hasn't had a playmaker at tight end since Jeremy Shockey. Fleener's addition will help the Giants offense continue to make steps forward.
