NBA Rumors: Power Ranking Top Destinations for JR Smith

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

J.R. Smith’s contract is going to be up with his Chinese basketball team soon and he will be allowed to return to the NBA in the near future.

Let’s take a look at the top teams for him to land with when he returns to American shores.

No. 1 - Los Angeles Clippers

The Clips just lost Chauncey Billups for the rest of the season and possibly longer. He was starting at Smith’s natural shooting guard position before going down with a torn ACL.

Now the up and coming LA team needs someone to fill his shoes for their upcoming playoff run.

There is no one better available than Smith, who provides instant offense whether he is starting or coming off the bench.

He’s a dead-eye marksman from deep when open, which he will certainly continue being with Chris Paul passing the rock.

He can also slash his way to the rim with his athleticism, something the Clippers are in dire need of to keep the defense honest when CP3 is under pressure.

No. 2 - Minnesota Timberwolves

This surprise destination would grant J.R. his wish of showing off his talents in hopes of earning a big contract this upcoming offseason.

The Wolves have $2.5 million to offer for the rest of the year and are in the thick of the playoff hunt right now.

Smith should highly consider this option, as he would be able to star alongside Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love while possibly putting himself in line for a long-term deal with the team.

No. 3 - Chicago Bulls

Chicago could definitely use more depth, and the offense firepower that Smith provides off the bench might help them make another deep playoff run.

Rip Hamilton should still start if he can get healthy, but having J.R. to spell him and space the floor would be a perfect scenario in the Windy City.

He’d also provide insurance to Luol Deng, whose torn ligaments in his left wrist are hindering his production and causing him to miss games sporadically.
