NFL Honors 2012 Predictions: Aaron Rodgers Will Win MVP Award Outright

Justin WeltonJun 4, 2018

The NFL will have their first ever NFL Honors on Saturday, Feb. 4 2012 to celebrate the best in the sport that Americans love and cherish.

There will be several awards handed out on Saturday, but one catches my eye the most: the NFL MVP Award. With all this talk about a possible Co-MVP possibility, here are reasons why Aaron Rodgers should and will win the award outright.

Let’s examine the numbers for Rodgers, Tom Brady and Drew Brees:

Rodgers: 4,643 yards passing, 45 touchdowns and six interceptions. He connected on 68.3 percent of his passes and had a quarterback rating of 122.5. Most importantly, the Green Bay Packers went 15-1.

Brady: 5,235 yards passing, 39 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He connected on 65.6 percent of his passes and had a quarterback rating of 105.6. The New England Patriots finished 13-3.

Brees: 5,476 yards passing, 46 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He connected on 71.2 percent of his passes and had a quarterback rating of 110.6. The New Orleans Saints finished 13-3.

All three defenses were lousy, so you can throw that factor out the window.

Team records should and generally do matter in the MVP race. Green Bay went 15-1 coming off a Super Bowl season; not too many teams will ever be able to accomplish this feat. New England lost three times: once to the 6-10 Buffalo Bills. They also dropped one game on their home field to the New York Giants.

New Orleans also lost three games—all were on the road. Two of their three losses came against teams that had a combined record of 6-26 (St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers). There is absolutely no excuse for that to happen; the quarterback has to be held accountable. He passed for two touchdowns compared to five interceptions in those two games.

The Saints' other loss came to Rodgers and the Packers on the road, so that also has to be factored in to the equation.

How about help on offense?

The Saints had the sixth-best rushing attack in the NFL, the Patriots had the 20th and Green Bay had the 27th-best rushing attack in the league. Clearly, Rodgers has been playing with little help from his run game.

People tend to forget just how great New Orleans rushing attack is. Voters shouldn’t forget about it.

Finally, turnovers are what decide football games for the most part. Rodgers threw six picks in the entire campaign. Brees threw 14, and Brady had 12. Rodgers gave his team the best opportunity to win games, which is why they went 15-1 this season.

Rodgers deserves the MVP because he was the best player from the best team. He didn’t have the best help from his rushing attack on offense, and he didn’t turn the ball over like the other two quarterbacks did.

Prediction:

1. Aaron Rodgers

2. Drew Brees

3. Tom Brady
