Super Bowl 2012 Prop Bets: 4 Interesting Over/Under Bets

John RozumFeb 2, 2012

Aside from the normal Super Bowl XLVI prop bets between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, there are some interesting ones as well.

Now, these prop bets aren't absolutely insane, however, they are at least worth a window shop, especially when you combine the teams, markets and the encompassed popularity of pro football.

Over/Under 17.5 Defensive Plays for Julian Edelman

1 of 4

According to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston, Patriots utility man Julian Edelman has played defense in seven games including the postseason.

Adding up all of Edelman's plays, he's contributed to 125 snaps for Bill Belichick's defense.

That being said, Edelman averaged roughly 17.8 defensive plays per game where he lined up on the dark side, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Julian be given the green light a few times in the Super Bowl.

Now, obviously against an explosive offense like New York, Belichick must use Edelman wisely for situational purposes.

So, despite playing in as many as 41 plays on defense during a game, don't expect nearly that number in the biggest game of the season barring any unfortunate injuries.

Over/Under 47.5 TV Rating

2 of 4

Every year since the 2005-06 NFL season the Super Bowl has increased its TV rating.

Last season, a record 111 million viewers watched the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, and we can only expect more this time around.

With Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Bill Belichick and the country's two biggest markets playing against one another as they did four years ago, Super Bowl XLVI is going to be nuts.

Include the Super Bowl commercials, halftime show and the city of Indianapolis and it's a no-brainer. Not to mention Tom Brady is Peyton Manning's biggest rival and Eli Manning is obviously Peyton's younger brother.

Plus the game is in Peyton's backyard, so that alone will make the ratings skyrocket.

Over/Under 6.5 New York Giants Penalties

3 of 4

Throughout the 2011-12 NFL playoffs the New York Giants have committed 19 penalties for 157 yards.

By comparison, the New England Patriots have committed just three penalties for 25 yards. So, for anyone interested in the most minuscule of details when it comes to winning football games, penalties are deadly.

For as complex as the game is, what it can arguably be broken down to is the field position battle. Whoever can position themselves for better scoring opportunities while taking advantage of the opponent's mental errors has a significant edge.

And with 132 penalty yards separating the Giants and Patriots this postseason, that's even longer than a football field's length when you include the end zones (which would make it 120 yards).

So, unless New York proves that it can keep focused, penalties will play a major role.

Over/Under 1 Minute 34 Seconds for the National Anthem

4 of 4

From the time Kelly Clarkson begins singing the national anthem until she finishes, 94 total seconds is the over/under.

Now, if you watch this video you'll notice it takes her only about 90 to 91 seconds to sing the national anthem. That being said, a few extra seconds are being given thanks to some invariable factors.

First and foremost, it's the Super Bowl, so some slack is given for how big the event simply is. That then leads into possibly missing a word and/or carrying out notes longer than anticipated.

In short, a margin of error if you will, but being that she is a professional and has done this on numerous big stages, Clarkson should give a flawless performance.
