Dallas Cowboys: 4 Players to Stay Away from in the NFL Draft

Alex HallJun 7, 2018

Watching the New York Giants make it to Indianapolis has to sting the Dallas Cowboys and should further motivate the organization to draft an excellent class of rookies.

The Cowboys were just a Miles Austin catch away from being the NFC East representative in the playoffs instead of New York, but the 'Boys will need to retool this offseason if they want to play past 16 games next year.

While this list isn't necessarily made up of players I hate, it's more about what makes the most sense for the organization given the needs this team has.

Here are four players Dallas would be wise to steer clear of come NFL draft day.

Jamell Fleming, Cornerback, Oklahoma

1 of 4

Jamell Fleming has been represented Oklahoma well at the Senior Bowl and seems destined to be a mid to late first-round pick come April, but there will be better corners available for Dallas at 14.

Janoris Jenkins is who the Cowboys should take in the first round. He was also tearing it up at the Senior Bowl and as Bleacher Report's own Matt Miller noticed, both owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett liked what they saw from the former Florida CB.

Obviously, Jenkins has his baggage, specifically his marijuana troubles that had him move from Florida to North Alabama, but Jones has taken the risk on bringing in players like Charles Haley, Terrell Owens and Dez Bryant in the past.

All of those signings worked out just fine, just like drafting Jenkins will.

Melvin Ingram, Defensive End, South Carolina

2 of 4

It's not like the Cowboys don't need defensive line help, and Melvin Ingram is first-round talent. That being said, he's not the type of talent Dallas needs.

Despite the defense needing help, if Jenkins is gone at 14 the Cowboys should focus on guys like Riley Reiff and Peter Konz to shore up the offensive line.

America's Team will go defense-heavy in this draft, so if Jenkins is gone then maybe they should use the first-round pick on a player who can come right in and be an instant improvement over their current O-line members.

Mike Adams, Offensive Tackle, Ohio State

3 of 4

With that being said, while Mike Adams comes from a college football powerhouse, I like the Wisconsin and Iowa men much more.

Peter Konz gives the Cowboys what they lacked all 2011, and that was a solid center who could snap the ball properly to quarterback Tony Romo.

With Riley Reiff, I just see more potential out of the guy than I do Adams. He has the ability to play both tackle positions and has been a solid contributor to the Iowa offense season in and season out during his college career.

While I believe Adams can too be a fine NFL player, there should be better players available on offensive line than him when Dallas is on the clock.

Any Quarterbacks

4 of 4

The 2012 NFL draft class isn't exactly full of depth at the quarterback position, with Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck being the only elite options.

Dallas won't be looking at either of the two, and while there are some solid backup options like Kellen Moore, the organization already has the young Stephen McGee on the roster.

The Cowboys need to find themselves a backup for Tony Romo, but it should be a veteran like a Jason Campbell or Kyle Orton not a rookie who will have to learn the ropes of the NFL.

Brad Johnson and Jon Kitna have been solid options for this team when Romo was down with various injuries, and there's far more benefit in having a proven veteran to come in and hold down the fort than an unproven talent.
