Wolverines Weather the Storm vs. Purdue, Prepare for Matchup with Ohio State

Andrew SilversheinJan 25, 2012

The No. 22 Michigan Wolverines (16-5, 6-2 in the Big Ten) got a much needed Big Ten road win against the Purdue Boilermakers on Tuesday night.

Michigan hadn't won at Mackey Arena in seven years, but all that changed with a nail-biting 66-64 victory. Purdue's senior forward, Robbie Hummel, missed a three-pointer to take the lead with 10 seconds left.

The Wolverines were up 44-34 with 13:41 remaining in the second half until Purdue stormed back with a 17-3 run to take a 51-47 lead. From that point on, it was a seesaw battle between these two Big Ten squads, and ultimately, Michigan came out on top.

John Beilein, via Twitter, said "It feels good to bring home a win from Purdue! We've been close on the road a couple of times this year but tonight we got it done. Go Blue!"

Tim Hardaway Jr. played his best game in a long time. He was aggressive, he attacked the rim and gave the Wolverines clutch buckets down the stretch. He finished with 19 points (8-15 from the field), four rebound, and two threes.

Stu Douglass and Jordan Morgan each played solid, adding 12 points a piece. Evan Smotrycz contributed 10 off the bench as well.

Michigan will now prepare for a showdown on Sunday against that school from Ohio. The No. 3 Buckeyes are 17-3 and tied for second in the Big Ten with a record of 5-2.

Ohio State's Jared Sullinger has played well this season, posting 17.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 59 percent from the field. Senior guard William Buford has also looked good in 2011-12, averaging 15.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per contest.

Columbus will be crazy on Sunday afternoon, and it should be a great rivalry game between these two teams who share no fond feelings for one another.

In-depth pre-game analysis for No. 22 Michigan vs. No. 3 Ohio State coming soon.
