Serena Williams: Why Serena Is the Greatest Women's Athlete Ever
There have been many amazing female athletes over the years, but none have become the icon that Serena Williams has across the world.
Williams has the advantage over the other famous women sports stars because of the generation she is playing in. In a time of equality for all, Serena has become the face of the younger black females in the United States and a role model for a generation.
Since the youngest Williams sister started dominating the sport in 2002, she has become a pop icon and an international celebrity.
Despite injuries that have slowed her recent career down and even had some experts questioning her ability to return, Serena is talented enough to work through the pain and rust and win the whole darn 2012 Australian Open.
Williams told the Kansas City Star about what issues she is facing and what she needs to win again at the Aussie Open:
"I donโt let anything bother me. Itโs definitely different to have the ladies play so late, you know, so weโll see. Physically I felt fine. I was definitely moving better than I suspected. I still think I can move better, though, and just get that confidence
"
If Williams was to go on and win this Aussie Open, which is very possible because of the lack of elite talent this year, it would be her 40th career win on the WTA tour. That would put her at 13th all-time.
While the numbers overall are impressive, but donโt warrant the best womenโs athlete ever, look to the matches that mattered most. Serena is 4th all time in Grand Slam titles with an amazing 13-3 record when making it that far. Even tennis legends Steffi Graf and Chris Evert donโt have that kind of winning percentage.
The bottom line is that as good as Williams has been over the years and will continue to be for years to come, itโs her ability to become a focal point for the fans that arenโt tennis enthusiasts and draw them into the sport.
Ask the WTA who makes them the most money on the womenโs side. They can thank the greatest womenโs athlete ever for bringing womenโs tennis back to life.
