NBA Free Agent Speculation: Who Will Gamble on Gilbert Arenas?

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

The tragic tale of Gilbert Arenas has him without an NBA team to play for.

Just a mere two years ago, Arenas was having one of his four seasons in which he averaged over 20 points per game.

Then came the gun incident and subsequent suspension. Next came his game falling off and a trade from Washington to Orlando and it falling off even more.

Now Arenas is sitting in the unemployment line with no team ready to take a shot on him or his bad knees.

The knees are getting healthier, but does any team really want to take on the baggage that will come by signing Arenas?

He had a list of four teams that included the New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and whichever team signed Dwight Howard.

None of those situations are likely to happen, but eventually someone will take a gamble on Arenas.

Here's a look at some teams that might.

New Jersey Nets

They were the one team that appeared willing to bring on Arenas if they acquired Howard, but they have no guarantee of doing so. If they do land the big man though then they could still bring Arenas in as well.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs backcourt has been ravished by injuries and desperate times call for desperate measures. He wouldn't be a good fit though in San Antonio, especially having to play for a defensive minded coach in Greg Popovich.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers also need to desperately upgrade the point guard spot, but Arenas isn't a good fit here either, but it's something they could consider.

Kobe Bryant is rolling and the big guys are producing. They don't really need a score-first point guard, but adding another weapon could be an option.

Other than these three teams, no one else in the league has a dire need for a point guard, so Arenas would have to settle signing somewhere in a reserve role.

Eventually though someone is going to role the dice on Arenas. We will see if they crap out.
