Tim Tebow: Benching the Messiah for Understudy Brady Quinn Would Backfire

Eric BallJan 8, 2012

Talk of the Denver Broncos playing Brady Quinn on third downs is an absolute joke.

Tim Tebow brings much more to the table as the starting quarterback for Denver than Quinn. It’s no coincidence that the Broncos No. 1 ranked rushing offense didn’t take off until Tebow took over. The element of surprise when Tebow goes for the handoff isn’t there with Quinn and that half-second of locating the ball for a defense can be the difference between getting two yards on a carry or five.

Despite his recent woes, Tebow has been excellent protecting the ball during the Broncos’ 7-1 stretch in the middle of the season. Quinn has 13 turnovers in 13 career NFL starts.

Statistically it’s not like Quinn is going to be the next Aaron Rodgers. He averaged 134 yards passing in his 10 games as a starter for the Browns in 2009, his only real sample size as a starter in the NFL.

The offense was already re-made midseason when Kyle Orton got the boot; I think that’s enough for one year.

Early in the second quarter against the Steelers, Tebow threw a 51-yard bomb and a 30-yard touchdown pass in the span of three plays.

The leash has gotten longer and at this point it would be ludicrous to insert Quinn under any circumstances.

This is Tebow’s team for the remainder of this season and at least the next. The last three weeks made everybody forget that Tebow took a team that was 1-4 without him to the playoffs. From Andrew Luck talk to how to defend Ben Roethlisberger in the span of 12 weeks.

Spare me all of the jokes that come with No. 15 and his faith because on the field, Tebow Time in the NFL has just begun.

UPDATE: Tebow threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns while leading the Broncos to an improbable 29-23 win. The slight chance of seeing Quinn was destroyed early in the second quarter.

Back to being an anonymous backup for the former Notre Dame star.
