JJ Redick: Luka Dončić Takes Lakers to a 'Different Level' After Trade from Mavericks
Head coach JJ Redick has high expectations for the Los Angeles Lakers' offense once Luka Dončić is integrated into the lineup alongside LeBron James and Austin Reaves.
"I think the tactical nature of what we are trying to do and what we've been trying to do lately, it goes to a different level as you add Luka," Redick said Wednesday, per Jovan Buha of The Athletic. "And now, having three guys that can really create for themselves and for others, with Luka, LeBron and AR, I would expect our offense to be able to generate good stuff."
Lakers fans got an early glimpse of what Dončić will look like after the team posted pictures of the superstar in his new jersey:
Los Angeles is a solid 10th in the league with an offensive rating of 114.2, per NBA.com, but that offense is about to look quite different with the addition of Dončić and the subtraction of Anthony Davis, who went to the Dallas Mavericks in the trade.
It has been no Davis and no problem of late, as the Lakers averaged 128 points in its last three games even though he wasn't on the floor. James has been leading the way of late, but the 40-year-old won't have to do as much when Dončić joins the group.
After all, they are traditionally both ball-dominant players who generate much of the offense for themselves and others. Having the 25-year-old Dončić there alongside the King will be an adjustment but will also allow the veteran to pace himself before the playoffs.
And letting Dončić operate the offense is anything but a second-rate option, as he is third in NBA history in points per game behind only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.
James, Dončić and even Reaves will be able to hunt mismatches in the playoffs and consistently exploit them, which will put defenses in positions where they may have to send double teams. That will only create more space for the other playmakers, which will increase the Lakers' overall efficiency.
It is quite the formula for a team looking to make a deep postseason run.
