NBA Rumors: 'Everybody Knows' Lakers Eye Another Trade After Luka, Anthony Davis Deal

Scott PolacekFeb 2, 2025

The Los Angeles Lakers shocked the NBA world, but they reportedly might not be done.

After ESPN's Shams Charania reported the Lakers acquired Luka Dončić and sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team deal Saturday, Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press reported Sunday that a person inside the NBA texted "Everybody knows the Lakers are trying to do more even after this."

That Los Angeles will look to make another move shouldn't be that surprising.

After all, Davis was the offensive and defensive anchor for the frontcourt. LeBron James and Dončić aren't exactly known as defensive forces at this stage of their career, and the Purple and Gold may need an impact defensive player to help make up for the loss of Davis.

Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes are also solid rotational pieces in the frontcourt, but they don't bring the star power that Davis did. Even adding more depth could help make up for the lost production in the aggregate.

Then there is the nature of playing alongside two ball-dominant players with the gravitational pull of Dončić and James.

Opposing defenses will be consistently collapsing on one or both of those stars, which will create plenty of open looks on the perimeter for their teammates who are on the floor.

Dorian Finney-Smith and Austin Reaves are both effective outside shooters, but adding another long-range option would make the Lakers all the more dangerous down the stretch. They could even go with small-ball lineups and surround the Dončić and James pairing with three capable shooters to further stretch opposing defenses.

Maxi Kleber also came to Los Angeles in the deal and can provide both frontcourt depth and outside shooting, but he underwent foot surgery and remains a question mark at this point.

So the Lakers may respond by doing some more shopping ahead of the Thursday deadline.
