Steph Curry on Warriors' Historic Kerr Loss: 'Not Great; Captain Obvious Statement'

Adam WellsJan 21, 2025

If the next two weeks are going to determine what direction the Golden State Warriors take prior to the trade deadline, they got off to a dreadful start with the worst home loss of the Steve Kerr era against the Boston Celtics on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after the 125-85 defeat, Stephen Curry said the game was "not great" and called that a "Captain Obvious statement."

Curry did add they will "see how we respond" to this particular defeat going forward:

"But just the idea that we can keep ourselves afloat until we get some guys back can kind of make or break our season to be honest, to keep it real. ... Nobody's counting game-by-game type thing, but a six- to eight-game stretch can kind of define where we are going forward the rest of the season."

In addition to being the worst home loss under Kerr, it was the worst home loss for the Warriors since a 149-104 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 15, 1985.

Injuries are at least part of the reason why the Warriors had such a poor showing against the Celtics. Their starting five included Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Dennis Schröder and Gary Payton II.

Jonathan Kuminga missed his eighth consecutive game due to a sprained ankle. The Warriors announced prior to tipoff that Draymond Green is going to miss at least one week due to a mild calf strain.

The non-Curry minutes, particularly in the first half, were abysmal for the Warriors. Schröder was minus-19 in 12 minutes through the first two quarters.

This loss came six days after Curry and Green publicly said they don't want to see the Warriors front office make a "desperate" move prior to the trade deadline. It wasn't an admission that they don't want to win, but more an honest assessment that a true difference-making player may not be available and it would take a lot to elevate this version of the team into being a true title contender.

Since their 12-3 start to the season, the Warriors have lost 18 of their last 27 games. They are tied with the Phoenix Suns for 10th in the Western Conference standings.

Golden State has eight games remaining before the trade deadline. The opponents during that stretch include the Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz twice, Oklahoma City Thunder, Suns and Orlando Magic.
