Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors: Heat Don't Feel 'Urgency' amid Suns, Warriors Buzz

Paul KasabianDec 17, 2024

The Miami Heat reportedly don't have "urgency" to deal Jimmy Butler, who can decline his $52.4 million player option for 2025-26 and become a free agent over the summer.

"This is exactly where it is: the Heat are open to listening to trade offers for Jimmy Butler,"
ESPN's Shams Charania said Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show (h/t RealGM). "That's what sources told me last week. That remains the case. There's no urgency though. He's on a $49 million contract this year. He has a $52 million player option for next year. They don't really have much fear... let's say he goes into free agency, they're not that fearful that there's a team out there that is going to be willing to give him... because there's only a few teams with cap space. So who's out there to give that to him? They're confident with where they're at."

Charania later said on NBA Today that Butler has the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns atop his list of preferred destinations:

The 35-year-old Butler, a six-time All-Star, is averaging 19.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.

Charania previously reported that Butler is open to a trade to the Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets and Suns and that Miami is listening to trade offers.

Butler's agent, Bernie Lee, stated that Charania's reporting was "fabricated" in a series of posts on social media.

Charania continued to stand by his reporting Tuesday.

"The situation is I 100 percent stand behind the reporting," Charania said. "This is probably the most vetted story I think I have ever put out. I'm that confident in the story."

He added: "The reporting that I had is that if he were to be moved, there's four destinations he would be open to from what I've been told that's been indicated around the league. That's the Mavericks, that's the Rockets, the Warriors and the Suns. That all remains to be the case. One-thousand percent. And it's fully, fully vetted."

The Heat have been rolling of late, winning four straight before falling 125-124 to the Detroit Pistons in overtime on Monday. Butler dominated that matchup with 35 points, 19 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals.

It's pretty clear there's plenty left in Butler's tank, and the Heat are still competitive this season at 13-11 (sixth in the Eastern Conference). On one hand, it doesn't make much sense for the Heat to deal a top star when they are still very much so in the playoff hunt. On the other hand, therein lies the risk of losing Butler for nothing this offseason.

Regardless of what the Heat (and Butler) want, he remains a great and productive member of a team on the upswing that's looking to go three games above .500 on Friday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
