Tim Tebow: Lack of Reps Proves John Elway is Thinking QB in 2012 NFL Draft
The Denver Broncos have added unneeded pressure onto their team ahead of their Wild Card weekend matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers with the news that backup quarterback Brady Quinn has been taking some first-team snaps in practice.
One has to believe that the Broncos are looking to see what Quinn can do with the starters in case Denver falls behind early against the Steelers and it's clear Tim Tebow isn't going to be effective.
But is there a bigger question here, is John Elway thinking about drafting a quarterback in the 2012 NFL draft?
I think so, and with the inconsistency in Tebow's play this season, especially late in the year, the Broncos still have real issues at quarterback going forward.
To be honest, after Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, there aren't many, if any tremendous quarterbacks that would upgrade the Broncos at that position immediately.
If Elway is thinking of drafting a quarterback in the NFL Draft this April he is insane. The chances of him trading into the top 10 to get Luck, which won't happen, or Griffin is very low.
The Broncos are a playoff caliber team, especially with the AFC West division being so bad, and they don't need to mortgage their future draft picks to move up for Griffin, who isn't a lock to be an all-pro NFL quarterback.
Elway was a hall of fame quarterback as a pure pocket passer. He could move out of the pocket and throw on the run well, but he was a pocket passer that carved up defenses with his accuracy and arm strength.
I strongly believe he wants a normal pocket passer to lead the Broncos, and not the dual threat quarterback that can pass and run like Tebow.
Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden, Boise State's Kellen Moore, and Arkansas' Tyler Wilson are three quality players who are pocket passers. Each has had tremendous success at the collegiate level with their respective teams, and each projects to be capable NFL players.
Moore and Wilson will probably be available to draft in the second round, so the Broncos likely wouldn't have to trade up to get either one of those players.
The NFL has become a passing league, one in which you cannot be a Super Bowl caliber team unless you have an elite pocket passer.
Elway will look at the upcoming NFL draft and realize he needs a true pocket passer to help the Broncos get to the next level.
