Video: LeBron James Should Be Lakers' Next HC, Says NBA Legend Byron Scott
To hear Los Angeles Lakers legend Byron Scott tell it, his former team shouldn't look far when searching for its next head coach.
"It's obvious, to me at least, that he's making a lot of the decisions that are going on in this organization," Scott said of LeBron James during Thursday's episode of Undisputed. "From a coaching standpoint to a players standpoint. So if you're going to allow him to make those decisions, sit on the bench and make those decisions as well. Be the head coach."
While Scott and host Skip Bayless discussed the possibility of James being a player-coach, the NBA no longer allows the player-coach in today's game.
To make this a reality, James would have to retire.
And while he may be 39 years old, the King was still one of the best players in the league this past season, averaging 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. He didn't look like someone on the verge of retirement, especially this offseason, so the idea of him being the coach in 2024-25 is not realistic.
The Purple and Gold have already been connected to names such as Mike Budenholzer, Kenny Atkinson, JJ Redick and Ty Lue this offseason as they search for Darvin Ham's replacement.
There are some connections to James there seeing how he and Redick co-host a podcast and Lue coached him with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but one Eastern Conference executive told Sean Deveney of Heavy that "LeBron has a reputation for pulling strings and dictating moves, and that gets way overblown. Anyone who has worked with him will say, he is easy to work with."
The future Hall of Famer also has a player option for next season, so it's not even a guarantee that he will be back with the Lakers.
Still, they will surely at least seek out his opinion as they search for their next head coach even if it's not going to be No. 23 himself.
