Coles was identified after being found unresponsive with a gunshot wound at a party.
According to Troy Kless, Cheryl Mercedes and Lupita Villarreal of KHOU 11, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the incident occurred around 11 p.m. local time.
Police were initially called to the scene as a welfare check in response to reports of underage drinking at a short-term rental property.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they were told a man, later identified as Coles, was in the backyard having a seizure. As they attempted CPR to revive the man, deputies noticed a gunshot wound to his chest.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it appears a shooter or shooters "intentionally shot" in the direction of the house from about a block away. The suspects left the scene in a vehicle and remain at large.
Braxton Coles, Jarvon's grandfather and guardian, told KHOU 11 his grandson told him he was going to "hang out with a couple of buddies" when he last saw him.
Coles recently visited Lamar University and was planning to play college football there after graduating from high school. Braxton said his grandson had a 4.1 grade point average and had been accepted into 15 different colleges.
Hurts, who was born in Houston, played high school football at Channelview in Texas. Channelview and North Shore have a longstanding rivalry on the field as members of Texas Division 6A Region III.
During the 2014 season, Hurts completed a last-second Hail Mary to give the Falcons a 49-48 win over the Mustangs. The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak against North Shore.
