NFL Rumors: Patriots' Bill Belichick Could Draw Interest from NFC South Teams

Scott PolacekJan 4, 2024

Bill Belichick will forever be a New England Patriots legend, but he may find himself in the NFC South as soon as next season.

Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reported there is mutual interest between Belichick and the Patriots to potentially "part ways and start anew" following the 2023 campaign. She noted teams within the NFC South would be interested if that becomes a reality.

It's notable the NFC South could be interested in the legend, as the case can be made that any of the four teams might move on from their coach during the upcoming offseason.

Nobody is above .500 in the division, and the 7-9 Atlanta Falcons still have a chance to reach the postseason depending on how things unfold with the 8-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and 8-8 New Orleans Saints.

The 2014 Carolina Panthers already fired Frank Reich and have Chris Tabor working in an interim role. There has also been no shortage of speculation about Arthur Smith's future in Atlanta, Dennis Allen's future in New Orleans and Todd Bowles' future in Tampa Bay.

The opportunity to add someone with a resume like Belichick's could change the outlook for any of the front offices.

He is a six-time Super Bowl champion who has 333 combined regular season and playoff wins throughout his career. Don Shula has the record with 347, and Anderson reported one of Belichick's goals is to surpass that mark.

Reaching 14 wins with the current-day Patriots would likely take some time, as they are 4-12 on the season. Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe do not look like franchise quarterbacks, which means New England may have to start the rebuilding process over again this offseason by selecting a signal-caller in the NFL draft.

It just might not be Belichick making that draft pick if he and the Patriots decide to split ways after a disappointing campaign.
