Fiesta Bowl 2012: Epic Stanford and Oklahoma State Clash Is an Instant Classic

After last year’s dreadful Fiesta Bowl between Connecticut and Oklahoma, the good people at the BCS were kind enough to make sure better team matched up this season.

They couldn’t have imagined just how great the Stanford Cardinal vs. the Oklahoma State Cowboys game last night would be. The 41-38 victory for Oklahoma State was the biggest win in school history and the kind of message to the BCS the Cowboys were trying to send.

All of college football knew that the Oklahoma State players and coaches felt like they were swindled by the BCS computers, so expecting anything less than a full-on assault would have been foolish for Stanford. As good as their defense is, it can’t stop a running hot OK State offense.

The same can be said about the Cowboys defense, though.

Stanford and the One-Man Gang Andrew Luck took it to the OK State defense all day while they did the same to his team’s defense. It turned into a heavyweight boxing match where both fighters are just standing in the middle of the ring throwing the hardest punches they can.

The teams combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense on Monday night, making the Fiesta Bowl one of the most exciting in recent memory. It also didn’t hurt that there were at least two top-10 2012 NFL draft picks auditioning for teams.

While many mock draft experts will say that this will hurt Andrew Luck’s stock a bit, there is no way that anything he did in this game will hurt his chances of being drafted No. 1 overall. That’s a 100 percent guarantee.

Cowboys’ receiver Justin Blackmon told the media he is entering the NFL draft after one of the greatest seasons a receiver could have at the college level.

With all things considered, when we look back on this game in ten years, this could be the most memorable bowl game from 2012. I know I’ll never forget it.
