Report: Bryce Young Won't Throw at NFL Combine; Stroud, Levis, Richardson Will

Tyler ConwayFeb 27, 2023

Bryce Young reportedly will not throw at the 2023 NFL combine, but his competition will.

Young will wait until Alabama's pro day to throw, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, while C.J. Stroud, Will Levis and Anthony Richardson plan to participate in the combine throwing sessions, per Rapoport.

Young is the favorite to be the first quarterback taken in April's draft. The Alabama product threw for 8,356 yards and 80 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in his career, winning the 2021 Heisman Trophy and winning a national championship the previous season as a freshman backup.

Gifted with every skill set you would want from a modern quarterback, Young's lone concern is his size. He was listed at 6'0" and 194 pounds at Alabama, and some have questioned whether his body can hold up to the rigors of an NFL schedule.

Stroud put up his own video game numbers at Ohio State and arguably faces more concern based on the recent pro performances of Buckeyes quarterbacks than for his skill set. The struggles of Dwayne Haskins and Justin Fields to develop into elite passers have led to questions about whether Ohio State's system translates well to the pro game.

Stroud is an accurate passer who can make every throw on the field while possessing enough athleticism to move around in the pocket. It's likely he will excel in combine throwing drills, which will allow him to highlight his accuracy while not including an area of struggle (throwing against pressure).

Levis and Richardson are the two wild cards, players who were gifted with incredible physical tools but gave their teams inconsistent production at the collegiate level. Both are bound to garner comparisons to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who developed into a superstar after coming into the NFL as a physically talented but raw quarterback.
