Nets' Roster, Starting Lineup, Salary Cap, Draft Picks After Kyrie Irving Trade

Scott PolacekFeb 5, 2023

And Kyrie Irving's tenure is over with the Brooklyn Nets.

Brooklyn traded the eight-time All-Star and Markieff Morris to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 unprotected first-round pick, a 2027 second-round pick and a 2029 second-round pick to the Nets, per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

The Nets' roster is now as follows with the potential starters in bold when the team is completely healthy:

Patty Mills

Ben Simmons

That is plenty of talent, but the team has $179.5 million in total cap allocations and is currently listed at $65 million over the salary cap on Spotrac.

The draft picks involved in Sunday's deal will be added to a future draft situation for the Nets that looks like this, per RealGM:

Incoming

  • "2023 first-round draft pick from Houston or Philadelphia (outgoing swap, Brooklyn outgoing to Houston or Utah)"
  • 2025 second-round draft pick from Miami
  • 2027 first-round draft pick from Philadelphia

Outgoing

  • "2023 second-round draft pick to Philadelphia or Atlanta (swap, least favorable of Brooklyn, Atlanta and Charlotte incoming)"
  • 2024 first-round draft pick to Houston
  • 2024 second-round draft pick to Houston
  • 2025 first-round draft pick to Houston (swap, Oklahoma City or Houston incoming)

From a 2022-23 perspective, it is easy to look at this trade and wonder if it is the end of Brooklyn's chances at winning a championship this season.

After all, Irving is one of the best point guards in the league with a resume that includes a championship, three All-NBA nods and eight All-Star selections. He has played at a high level this season and is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.

However, Kevin Durant is arguably the best player in the league when healthy, and he now has a fairly deep supporting cast around him with the addition of Dinwiddie and Finney-Smith.

There is no shortage of shooters to take advantage of the space he creates, Nic Claxton is playing at a career-best level down low and the team no longer has to worry about the distractions that come with Irving being on the roster.

Assuming Durant is healthy for the playoffs and isn't also moved ahead of Thursday's deadline, all is not lost for the 2022-23 Nets.

But they also have a number of future draft picks to look forward to if they do start to slip down the standings without Irving.
