Bears Rumors: 'Prevailing Theme' GM 'Very High' on Targeting Value in 2023 NFL Draft

Erin WalshFeb 3, 2023

The Chicago Bears own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, but that is the franchise's only selection in the top 50, and it's possible it will look to acquire more selections.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles "is very high on value," according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who added the 37-year-old "will most likely aim" to change the fact that the team doesn't have more than one selection in the top 50.

The Bears didn't have a single first-round pick in the 2022 draft, though they did make a total of 11 selections, including second-rounders Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker and third-rounder Velus Jones Jr.

Chicago also drafted quarterback Justin Fields 11th overall in 2021 and wouldn't have to use the No. 1 overall pick to fill that position this offseason after he showed growth as both a passer and runner during the 2022 campaign.

That said, the No. 1 overall pick is still very valuable, and if the Bears don't trade the pick, they'll be selecting one of the premier players available in the draft.

However, they don't appear to be too attached to the selection.

During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, NFL insider Albert Breer reported that the Bears are going to "try and get somebody to trade for" the No. 1 overall pick "or take Jalen Carter or Will Anderson."

After finishing with a 3-14 record this season, the Bears could use upgrades in several areas. By trading the No. 1 overall pick, they can acquire more draft capital that will allow them to improve across the board.

It's unclear which teams might be eyeing the No. 1 overall pick, though teams in need of an upgrade at quarterback, such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets and Carolina, could be eyeing the selections.

If the Bears keep the selection, it will mark the first time they have picked first overall since 1947 when they picked Bob Fenimore. The only other time they picked No. 1 overall came in 1941 when they selected Tom Harmon.
