Nuggets Rumors: Bones Hyland's Trade Value Being Gauged Ahead of Deadline

Paul KasabianJan 27, 2023

Denver Nuggets guard Bones Hyland is a name to watch ahead of the Feb. 9 NBA trade deadline.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported Friday that Denver is considering its future at backup point guard behind Jamal Murray. Hyland and Bruce Brown are both capable of running the point, but the latter can decline his $6.9 million player option to become a free agent this offseason.

With that in mind, Fischer explained why Hyland, who was reportedly talked about in trade discussions around last June's NBA draft, could be on the block:

"While Hyland still has two more years remaining on his rookie deal, an anticipation of Brown's next payday, plus Hyland's upcoming second contract, has the tax-conscious Nuggets considering their options in the backcourt. Occasional clashes between Hyland and head coach Michael Malone's old-school mentality have also been a factor in Denver's trade dialogue, sources said."

Denver would covet a "defensive-minded frontcourt player" for Hyland in addition to a first-round pick. The Nuggets could also consider getting back a reserve point guard in case the team loses Brown in free agency.

Fischer named the Minnesota Timberwolves as a "potential suitor" with ex-Nuggets president Tim Connelly, who drafted Hyland, running the show for his new team.

Hyland has averaged 12.4 points in just 19.9 minutes per game off the bench for the Nuggets, who are first in the Western Conference. He is shooting 40.0 percent from the field and 38.5. percent from the three-point line. Hyland is a tremendous asset off the bench capable of dropping 20-plus on any given night.

For now, he remains a member of the Nuggets as they travel to Philadelphia for a road matchup with the 76ers on Saturday.
