2012 NFL Mock Draft: Who Will Land Robert Griffin III?
Now that the 2011 NFL season is almost finished and the Indianapolis Colts are now on the clock (I love it when they say that), the shift of the season leans towards the playoffs, the Super Bowl and the NFL Draft.
While there are many questions about who will and will not come out for the draft, there are some certainties that we can all count on. Andrew Luck of Stanford is almost an assured lock for the top pick unless something happens in Indianapolis or a trade is made with another team.
And while we cannot predict trades and who is staying in school right now, it is never too early to predict who will wind up where.
So, here is an updated look at the most recent draft order...
1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Stanford...He is the most complete passer to come out since the man he is going to replace, Peyton Manning.
2. St. Louis Rams: Justin Blackmon, Receiver, Oklahoma State...He gives Sam Bradford a real deep threat in the Rams' passing game.
3. Minnesota Vikings: Ryan Kalil, Tackle, Southern Cal...Big offensive linemen like him do not come around every year. He is the next great left tackle in the NFL.
4. Cleveland Browns: Morris Claiborne, Defensive Back, LSU...The drafting of Claiborne does two things; it gives the Browns two solid defensive backs along with Joe Haden and it helps the return game.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: David DeCastro, Guard, Stanford...He possibly can play all line positions and will help open holes for the running tandem of Earnest Graham and LeGarrette Blount.
6. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III, Quarterback, Baylor...He moves from Waco, Texas to the nation's capitol. Griffin is going to be asked to revive the team's passing attack.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Michael Floyd, Receiver, Notre Dame...Maybe a reach, but the Jaguars need a receiver and I think he will be the best of the bunch within the next four seasons.
8. Carolina Panthers: Riley Reiff, Tackle, Iowa...Another anchor of the offensive line. The running game got better as the season progressed, but it needs to be better.
9. Miami Dolphins: Quinton Coples, Defensive End, North Carolina...The Dolphins were a Jekyll and Hyde team this season and need help at DE/LB. Could fill in for the retiring Jason Taylor.
10. Buffalo Bills: Dre Kirkpatrick, Cornerback, Alabama...Gives the Bills another cover corner and a player in the return game.
11. Seattle Seahawks: Trent Richardson, RB Alabama...Marshawn Lynch is signed through 2012. This provides insurance if a contract extension cannot be reached.
12. Kansas City Chiefs: Jonathon Martin, Tackle, Stanford...You cannot let a tackle this good get past you on this draft board. He blocked for Andrew Luck.
13. Arizona Cardinals: Zach Brown, Linebacker, North Carolina...Speed on the outside is something Pete Carroll will appreciate. Brown, at 6'2" and 230 pounds is ideal for the Seahawks defense.
14. Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Kuechly, Linebacker, Boston College... The Eagles spent millions in the offseason to improve a defense this season. Kuechly is another key piece.
15. New York Jets: Dont'a Hightower, Linebacker, Alabama... The quarterback position was not the only thing that let the Jets down this season. Hightower provides instant youth and speed.
16. San Diego Chargers: Alfonzo Dennard, Defensive Back, Nebraska...Good speed and cover skills. He will be welcomed in a secondary that gave up plenty of big plays this year.
17. Cincinnati (from Oakland): Janoris Jenkins, Defensive Back, North Alabama...The most controversial pick in the draft. If he has his head on straight he is a real steal.
18. Chicago Bears: T.Y. Hilton, Receiver, Florida International...He will move up draft boards with his speed and agility. Could be the sleeper pick of this draft and the Bears need receivers.
19. New York Giants: Cordy Glenn, Guard, Georgia...He can play three inside line positions. The Giants are notorious for finding great inside maulers.
20. Tennessee Titans: Alshon Jeffery, Receiver, South Carolina...He dropped as far as he is going to in this draft. Whoever the quarterback is next season, they have a new playmate.
21. Denver Broncos: Chase Minnifield, Defensive Back, Virginia...The Broncos have two great defensive backs in Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins, but they are getting up there in age.
22. Dallas Cowboys: Landry Jones, Quarterback, Oklahoma...The surprise of the draft. But remember, Jerry Jones is calling the shots.
23. Cincinnati Bengals: Vontaze Burfict, Linebacker, Arizona State...If he can lasso his behavior on the field, the Bengals may have found a "lite" version of Ray Lewis.
24. Houston Texans: Jared Crick, Defensive Tackle, Nebraska...He just adds talent to the Texans talent pool.
25. Cleveland (from Atlanta): Mohammed Sanu, Receiver, Rutgers...He is tall (6'2") and lean (215 pounds) and will be a nice target in the red zone regardless of who the quarterback is.
26. Detroit Lions: Devin Taylor, linebacker, South Carolina...The Lions are shoring up on defense and watching the offense explode.
27. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jerel Worthy, Defensive Tackle, Michigan State...The line is a little old and and the Steelers will be restocking over the next few years with players like Worthy.
28. Baltimore Ravens: Brandon Jenkins, Linebacker, Florida State...At some point, Ray Lewis will retire. He will never be Lewis, but Jenkins is pretty good.
29. New England Patriots (from New Orleans): Donte Paige-Moss, Defensive End, North Carolina...How they excel without top-flight pass rushers is beyond me. Paige-Moss will help.
30. San Francisco 49ers: Lamar Miller, Running Back, Miami... Frank Gore still runs the 49ers' attack. Miller will be a nice change of pace.
31. New England Patriots: LaMichael James, Running Back, Oregon... The Patriots always seem to find good runners who contribute to their potent offense.
32. Green Bay Packers: Peter Konz, Offensive Lineman, Wisconsin...He played center in college. Will add depth to the Packers' line.
