2012 NFL Mock Draft: Updated First-Round Mock Draft
The 2011 NFL Regular Season is winding down, with only the Sunday night NFC East showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants remaining before this year's campaign draws to a close.
For fans of many NFL teams that means it's time to put a disappointing 2011 season in the rearview mirror and look forward to 2012, and the first step for squads that missed the postseason is addressing team needs in April's NFL Draft.
With that in mind here's an updated look at how the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft could shake out (depending on some playoff results and players declaring), beginning with the first pick that everyone knows is coming.
1. Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford: The Colts draft Luck to hold a clipboard for Peyton Manning for a season or two before taking the reins in Indy.
2. St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil, OT, USC: Among the myriad of needs the Rams have is the offensive line, and the new coaching staff will go the safe route with the draft's best lineman.
3. Minnesota Vikings - Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU: The Vikings secondary was absolutely dreadful in 2011, and with Antoine Winfield not getting any younger the Vikes need to plug the hole.
4. Cleveland Browns - Justin Blackmon: WR, Oklahoma State: The fan in me wants Robert Griffin, but if the Browns staff gives McCoy one more year he's going to need some weapons on offense.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama: It's becoming apparent that LeFumble Blount isn't the answer at running back in Tampa, so the Bucs will move on.
6. Jacksonville Jaguars - Robert Griffin: QB, Baylor: Assuming that the Jaguars new ownership has seen Blaine Gabbert play they know that he isn't the future at the position for the Jaguars.
7. Washington Redskins - Landry Jones: QB, Oklahoma: When Rex Grossman and John Beck are your quarterbacks it makes draft day decisions like this much easier.
8. Carolina Panthers - Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina: The Panthers had issues in both run and pass defense in 2011 and will look to get better up front with Coples.
9. Miami Dolphins - Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M: Unless the QB-hungry Dolphins can move up to get Jones they'll make the draft's first reach taking Tannehil in the Top 10.
10. Buffalo Bills - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama: Buffalo desperately needs to upgrade in their secondary opposite the brittle Terrence McGee.
11. Kansas City Chiefs - Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa: The Chiefs get a great value pick and an instant upgrade on their offensive line.
12 . Arizona Cardinals - Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College: Paris Lenon is 34 and the Cardinals could really use a solid talent to pair inside with Daryl Washington.
13. Seattle Seahawks - Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford: With no "home run" need picks on the board Pete Carroll and company will go the best player available route.
14. San Diego Chargers - David DeCastro, G, Stanford: With Kris Dielman considering retirement the Chargers have a huge need on the interior of their offensive line.
15. Philadelphia Eagles - Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame: With DeSean Jackson likely out the door the Eagles will draft his replacement in the former Golden Dome.
16. New York Jets - Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama: The Jets badly need to upgrade their pass rush, and Upshaw has experience playing in the 3-4.
17. Chicago Bears - Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina: Israel Idonije is a replacement level talent and a free agent, so the Bears will grab a new batterymate for Julius Peppers.
18. Cincinnati Bengals (from Oakland) - Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska: The Bengals will use their first pick from the Carson Palmer robbery to acquire some much-needed secondary help.
19. Dallas Cowboys - Devon Still, DE/DT, Penn State: If there's a weak spot in the Dallas defense it's definitely along the defensive line, so the Cowboys will look to shore it up with Still.
20. Tennessee Titans - Cordy Glenn, G, Georgia: Some may view this pick as a bit of a reach but the Titans badly need to bolster their offensive line,
21. Denver Broncos - Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama: Jenkins has character concerns but he's the best player available at a position where Denver has a big need.
22. New York Giants - Vontaze Burfict, ILB, Arizona State: Burfict's a headcase but the Giants need linebacker help in the worst way imaginable.
23. Cleveland Browns (from Atlanta) - Lamar Miller, RB, Miami: If the Browns let Peyton Hillis walk in free agency it would be wise to use their second first rounder on his replacement.
24. Cincinnati Bengals - Mark Barron, SS, Alabama: Reggie Nelson's a free agent and Chris Crocker is so-so, so the Bengals could use some help at the safety position.
25. Houston Texans - Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina - Andre Johnson can't stay healthy, Kevin Walter is old, and Jacoby Jones couldn't catch the flu.
26. Detroit Lions - Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin: Dominic Raiola is a 33 year-old journeyman who isn't nearly worth his $4 million paycheck, so out with the old, in with the new.
27. Pittsburgh Steelers - Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama: James Farrior is ancient and Lawrence Timmons was a huge disappointment in 2011, so Hightower would be a very nice fit here.
28. Baltimore Ravens - Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC: The Ravens need to start finding an heir to Ray Lewis inside, but they'll have to settle for a pass rush upgrade after Hightower gets sniped.
29. New England Patriots (from New Orleans) - Chase Minnifield, CB. Virginia: In case you've been living under a rock all season, the Patriots need secondary help....bad.
30. San Francisco 49ers - Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB, Illinois: Mercilus is a versatile player who could fill the void left if Ahmad Brooks leaves in free agency.
31. New England Patriots - Jerel Worthy, DE/DT, Michigan State: The Patriots continue their defensive overhaul by taking a lineman that would fit nicely in Bill Belichick's scheme.
32. Green Bay Packers - Kendall Wright, WR/KR, Baylor: The rich get richer as the Packers go best player available and add yet another offensive weapon.
