Red Bull No Limits New Year's Eve: Sports World Must Learn from Daredevils
ESPN's New Year. No Limits best represents what New Year's Eve is all about. Trying something different. Without the mindset of trying something different, New Year's Eve is just another day on the calendar.
On paper, the difference between Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 is no different than the difference between Dec. 30 and Dec. 31, or Jan. 1 and Jan. 2.
Step outside right now and tell me what the weather's like. Now, step outside at the same time tomorrow. It will still be winter. If you're a Packers fan, your team is still good. If you're a Colts fan, your team is still not any good.
No, it's all about the attitude. If you tell yourself that something is different, then it's different. What better way to prove that then to take a bold chance?
Apparently, Robbie Maddison and Levi LaVallee agree. That's why they're going to simultaneously jump a bike (Maddison) and snowmobile (LaVallee) over 300 feet of water. If that's not taking a bold shot, what is?
The rest of the sports world has to learn from this though. If these two men are going to risk potential embarrassment (and possibly a lot more than that), there's no excuse for other people in the world of sports to not do the same.
Los Angeles Lakers, go for Dwight Howard: Jim Buss told T.J. Simers of the Los Angeles Times that the Lakers aren't going to move Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum for Dwight Howard. Why not?
Weren't Gasol and Bynum a part of the team that got swept in the second round of the playoffs last year? Didn't that team move one of its better players, to the team that swept them, no less? They sure did. If the Lakers are going to make significant strides towards winning a title, they need a change.
Dwight Howard is that change, to the tune of about 20 points and 15 rebounds a night. I know that Bynum and Gasol are both quality players, but this is a chance that the Lakers must take. Trade two two's for the four.
Denver Broncos, let Tim Tebow air it out: Your offense is not good enough to be one-dimensional. You might be able to sneak by the Chiefs again and get to the playoffs. But if you want anything more than a first round knockout, you need to get vertical.
So, turn Tebow loose a little bit. Stop running the high school offense. This doesn't mean that you can't ever let Tebow run, but try some bold plays in the game's first 55 minutes. Without it, you're not going to do anything in the playoffs. Offense is needed to win in the postseason.
St. Louis Cardinals, go for Prince Fielder: You lost Albert Pujols, one of the best players in franchise history. That's going to be tough to replace.
Fortunately, there's a man on the market that can do just that. Prince Fielder can bash the ball like nobody else. He would give the Cardinals a big hitting man in the middle to make them forget all about Pujols.
The risk here is that Fielder will be expensive. True, but this is a chance that has to be taken.
Starting tomorrow, it's a new year. If that doesn't mean new attitude, then it's just another day. These teams need to take a risk and not worry about the results.
