Gunner Kiel LSU: Prized Recruit Ensures Tigers Run of Dominance Will Continue
LSU just won multiple national championships. They won't play for the right to be crowned national champions this season until next month. However, on Tuesday, they just locked up a run of dominance that is going to extend beyond this season.
Steve Wiltfong of 247 Sports reported on SI.com that quarterback sensation Gunner Kiel has committed to LSU.
The Decision
The Columbus East High School (Indiana) product Kiel has decided to take his talents to the Bayou after considering, according to Wiltgong, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Purdue and USC.
Kiel will get a head start on his college career by enrolling in classes this semester.
Kiel's father, Kip, relayed some reasoning on his decision to Wiltfong:
"Just a gut feeling. The thing about LSU, they've been on him from the get go, and have been consistently on him from the get go, and it was a gut feeling that he had."
Kiel's Pedigree
247 Sports has Kiel ranked as the No. 12 recruit in the nation and the No. 1 pro-style passer. ESPN Recruiting Nation has Kiel ranked ans the No. 20 overall prospect and the No. 2 QB.
These rankings are not surprising. Kiel has all the tools you look for in a QB. He is 6'4" and 218 pounds. He has a strong, accurate arm and solid mobility.
As a senior, Kiel was named Indiana's Mr. Football. He was also the state's Gatorade Player of the Year.
They were well-earned honors, as he took his team to the semifinals of the state championships and finished the season throwing for 2,517 yards, 28 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He also added 427 yards and 12 touchdowns carrying the ball.
Impact on the Tigers
Kiel is going to help the Tigers not miss a dominant beat next year. LSU used both Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee at QB this year. Both are set to graduate this spring.
That leaves LSU with Zach Mettenberger, who had transferred from Georgia, and Jerrard Randall and Stephen Rivers, who are both true freshmen this year.
These players do not have the talent and potential of Kiel. Gunner (what a great name for a QB) will be able to step in and start from the first week.
LSU's amazing defense will allow Kiel to acclimate to the college game while not having to do too much. This will allow Kiel to acclimate to the college game and prepare him to make big plays as the Tigers' SEC schedule picks up.
Kiel is poised to make an impact as a freshman and then dominate as he matures. With LSU's recent history of defensive dominance, they are going to be unstoppable with a QB as talented as Kiel.
LSU's already bright future just got a lot more promising.
