NFL Free Agents 2012: Matt Flynn and Backups Who Will Get Starting Shots

T.J. McaloonDec 27, 2011

Free agency can bring a new beginning for players that are stuck behind superstar players. For a player like Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn, he will get a shot next year at becoming a starting quarterback.

Matt Flynn

Flynn has been the backup to Aaron Rodgers in Green bay for the last four years. He has not seen a lot of time as a starter, however, when he has come in, he has proven to be a good player.

When he filled in for Rodgers against the New England Patriots last year, Flynn had a very productive game of 251 yards, three touchdowns and a QB passer rating of 100.2. He came very close at defeating this Patriots team, losing 31-27.

If a team that needs a quarterback doesn’t get a chance to draft one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL draft, they will take a look at Flynn, who’s studied behind one of the best quarterbacks in Rodgers.

Chase Daniel

Daniel is a restricted free agent, so the Saints can match any offer that is thrown at the free agent quarterback.

However, being the backup to Drew Brees will have at least one, or two teams making an offer, that the Saints cannot match. It seems crazy to think that a team would give Daniels a big contract without seeing him in any real game action, however, learning from one of the best in the game will make a team want to offer him a big contract.

According to NOLA.com:

"

And no one was more impressed by Daniel's performance than Brees, who became the young quarterback's mentor throughout the offseason when the pair were the only two quarterbacks on the roster.

"I was really proud of Chase," Brees said. "He's worked extremely hard this offseason. He's had success despite the odds throughout his career. He wins games, and he makes plays. There's something to be said for that."

"

Dennis Dixon

Dixon has had a lot of promise in Pittsburgh, but will be a backup with the Steelers as long as Ben Roethlisberger is there.

If he is not re-signed by the Steelers, he could cash in with a new contract on a team that could use his mobile style. Dixon has shown flashes of brilliance in the preseason with the Steelers, and in limited time as the starting quarterback.

When Dixon took over for Roethlisberger in 2010, he led the Steelers to two victories.

He could help out a team that needs a great athlete as their quarterback.

These three quarterbacks may not be a household name, however, when your team signs them during free agency, they will gain the starting job and prove that they were worth the money.
