NFL Power Rankings Week 17: Non-Playoff Teams Heading for Big Offseasons

Wes ODonnellDec 27, 2011

All the current focus is on the NFL postseason, but only 12 of the 32 teams have the opportunity to compete in that tournament.

The remaining 20 teams get a head start on chasing down success next year. Whether it be via free agency, trade, draft or any combination of the three, there is plenty of work to do.

Here are a few non-playoff teams heading into a critical offseason.

Redskins

The bottom dwellers of the NFC East need a quarterback or coach Mike Shanahan may no longer be coach Mike Shanahan.

A year ago they opted to pass on Blaine Gabbert (good idea) and Christian Ponder (bad idea) in favor of Rex Grossman and John Beck.

That cannot happen again this year.

This team needs to find a legitimate franchise signal-caller or they'll be doomed to another season of pointlessly winning games they shouldn't and losing games they shouldn't.

Colts

Rather self-explanatory, the Colts need to decide whether to build for the present with Peyton Manning under center or possibly build for the future with Andrew Luck (if they earn the No. 1 pick) under center.

If they drop to No. 2 in the draft, they need to immediately trade the pick for all they can get.

Peyton Manning won't turn a two-win team into a Super Bowl contender by himself.

Dolphins

Much of the same that was said of Washington goes for Miami, only without the coach. The Dolphins can't possibly believe Matt Moore is a viable starter long-term and they've been trying to replace Dan Marino for far too long.

With Matt Barkley out of the draft, it certainly limits the Dolphins' options and they'll be forced to decide whether or not they believe in taking a shot on Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III if he's on the board.

Either way, this team needs a new quarterback going into next year. If they land the right one, they'll legitimately be competitive in the AFC East.
