NBA Rumors: Otis Smith's Patience Will Destroy Orlando Magic

Gabe ZaldivarDec 27, 2011

Otis Smith, the Orlando Magic's general manager, has a couple roads that he can take at the moment. It seems as though he will take the one that guarantees a dismal Magic future.

Dwight Howard looms as, not only the best big man in the league, but as the biggest issue ever facing the Magic franchise. The same issues that set Orlando back for years when Shaquille O'Neal bolted town faces them once again.

Otis Smith has a few options on the table. He Can trade Dwight Howard now and get a fairly good return on his investment. He can trade him later when the Magic falter and get much less on the big man dollar.

He can also keep him until the summer. The thought is that happens only if the Magic are flourishing, but that may still happen in spite of a bevy of losses.

Josh Robbins of The Orlando Sentinel reports Otis Smith is fairly confident that he has the right mix of personnel in the low post. Currently it is Dwight Howard, Glen Davis and then nothing. But such things don't bother Smith.

"

General Manager Otis Smith sounded as if he's in no rush to add another big man. Smith feels that the team is in better shape with Davis at the backup center spot than the team was at the end of last season, when Brandon Bass and Anderson served as Howard's backups.

"

So, not only is Smith hesitant to make a move to better the team, he is hellbent on exhausting Howard until he can't play another minute. Superman may be invincible in other seasons, but without minutes to rest and a ton of back-to-backs, this may be the year that Kryptonite makes its way into the Magic locker room.

The Magic don't have the depth to compete for a title amidst a landmine farm that is the Eastern Conference.

It looks more and more likely that Howard leaves for good in the summer after a forgettable season, and the Magic get nothing in return. That's one way to ensure a future of ineptitude.
