2011 BCS Playoff Predicitions: Who's Really the National Champion?
Though there is no BCS playoff in the foreseeable future, let's just think about the possibility of it. Taking the top 16 teams from the last BCS standings, we'll put them into a 16-team playoff. There will be four different divisions, which will be the four big BCS bowls.
But before you get to the BCS bowls, you have to go through another bowl. Taking the top-eight grossing lesser bowl games and having the teams play in those.
So let's see if LSU or Alabama is really worthy of the national championship game, and let's see how the BCS playoff system would work.
Rose Bowl Division : 1.) LSU vs. 16.) Georgia
1 of 15The Outback Bowl would pit a rematch of the 2011 SEC championship game. Georgia played well against LSU in the first half, but then LSU roared back and scored 42 unanswered points. This game would be closer than a lot of people think, but unfortunately for Georgia, the LSU defense and special teams will play a factor in yet another win against the Bulldogs.
PREDICTION: LSU 35, GEORGIA 21
Rose Bowl Division: 8.) Kansas State vs. 9.) South Carolina
2 of 15In the AT&T Cotton Bowl, the Gamecocks of South Carolina, would go up against the AARP team of Bill Synder and Kansas State. The would be an intriguing game of an SEC defense against a Big 12 offense.
But I believe South Carolina's defense with fabulous freshman Javon Clowney, will slow down the Wildcats. Kansas State quarterback Collen Klein will get his numbers and torch the South Carolina secondary. But the Ol' ball coach from South Carolina, will get them into the next round.
PREDICITON : South Carolina 26, Kansas State 20
Sugar Bowl Division: 4.) Stanford vs. 13.) Michigan
3 of 15Played in the Chick-fil-a Bowl, the new and improved defense of Michigan will go up against future No. 1 pick Andrew Luck, and Stanford. When Stanford lost their only game to Oregon, Luck went 27-for-41 for 256 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions. To no surprise, this was Luck's worst game of the season and dropped Stanford out of the BCS national championship picture.
Michigan plays better defense then Oregon. Though Michigan's offense is not Oregon's by any means, the offense is still up tempo and fast paced. Andrew Luck will find ways to exploit the Michigan defense, but in the end, the defense of Michigan will get to Andrew Luck. Look for this game to be a close one.
PREDICITION: Michigan 21, Stanford 20
Sugar Bowl Division: 5.) Oregon vs. 12.) Baylor
4 of 15In the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, the high-octane offense of Oregon will face the heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III in Baylor, Oregon's offense will be on the attack from the opening kick-off. RG III will provide some crazy athletic plays, but when it comes to the Oregon offense, it's no match for Baylor.
Blowout win...
PREDICITON: Oregon 46, Baylor 17
Fiesta Bowl Division: 2.) Alabama vs. 15.) Clemson
5 of 15In the Music City Bowl, the Alabama Crimson Tide will face the ACC champion Clemson Tigers. Sammy Watkins and Taj Boyd will be slowed down extremely against the number defense in the nation in Alabama. Alabama's offense may not be explosive, they still have the best running back in the nation in Trent Richardson.
Nobody has been able to stop Richardson this year, and I don't think the Clemson defense will be able to stop him. Look for Richardson to have a career day against Clemson.
PREDICTION: Alabama 24, Clemson 7
Fiesta Bowl Division: 7.) Boise State vs. 10.) Wisconsin
6 of 15In the Capital One Bowl, the Big Ten champion Wisconsin Badgers will go up against the cinderella Boise State Broncos. Kellen Moore is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in college football today. Moore will pick apart a secondary that got exposed in the Big Ten Championship game against Michigan State.
Russell Wilson, however, has a flare for the dramatic and can operate this Wisconsin offense down the field in a hurry. Boise State's defense is not as good as it was last year and Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball will set the record for most touchdowns in a single season. Though this game will be competitive, I see Boise State pulling off yet another upset in bowl season.
PREDICTION: Boise State 32, Wisconsin 29
Orange Bowl Division: 3.) Oklahoma State vs. 14.) Oklahoma
7 of 15In the Gator Bowl, produces the rematch of Bedlam in Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Again, the Oklahoma Sooners cannot compete with the high-octane offense of Oklahoma State and quarterback Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Justin Blackmon, who will have yet another huge game.
This would make Sooner fans hurt just a little more, knowing that they lost yet again to the supposedly little brother from Oklahoma.
PREDICTION: Oklahoma State 56, Oklahoma 20
Orange Bowl Division: 6.) Arkansas vs. 11.) Virginia Tech
8 of 15In the Alamo Bowl, the Arkansas Razorbacks take on the ACC runner-up in Virgina Tech. At one point in time, Arkansas was ranked third in the BCS and heading into Death Valley to face the LSU Tigers. Virginia Tech was a one-loss team, ranked sixth in the BCS and flirting with the national championship picture.
Both teams got embarrassed as Arkansas got blown out by LSU and Virginia Tech got blown out by Clemson. Both teams seem to be near replicas of each other, but Virginia Tech will pull away late. The Hokies will play Beamer Ball and come away with a win against the SEC.
PREDICITON: Virginia Tech 28, Arkansas 14
2nd Round, Rose Bowl Division: 1.) LSU vs. 9.) South Carolina
9 of 15Played in the Rose Bowl, it's a battle between the SEC West and SEC East. The LSU defense is second best in the nation behind Alabama. The Gamecocks of South Carolina have a freshman quarterback playing and that spells doom. The secondary of LSU will force South Carolina to make mistakes, propeling them to the next round.
PREDICTION: LSU 35, South Carolina 7
2nd Round, Sugar Bowl Division: 5.) Oregon vs. 13.) Michigan
10 of 15Played in the Sugar Bowl, Oregon will face the Michigan Wolverines. Though Michigan in the first round beat a Pac-12 team in Stanford, they will have no such luck against Oregon. Oregon's offense is to explosive and fast for Michigan's defense. The Oregon defense will be able to stop the dynamic Denard Robinson, and give the ball to their offense.
Though Michigan's defense is new and improved, not many teams have been able to stop Oregon's offense, It won't happen in this game either.
PREDICTION: Oregon: 39, Michigan 17
2nd Round, Fiesta Bowl Division: 2.) Alabama vs. 7.) Boise State
11 of 15In the Fiesta Bowl, the Alabama Crimson Tide will face the Boise State Broncos. The Alabama defense will be stellar in trying to stop Kellen Moore and the Boise State offense. Boise State is 2-0 in the Fiesta Bowl, and I gotta believe they will feel comfortable playing in that stadium.
This will be one of the biggest upsets in college football history, but Alabama's defense will be able to slow down the Broncos offense, and the Boise State defense will have a tough time stopping Trent Richardson as well. But Boise State head coach Chris Peterson will have his team ready to pull off this huge upset.
PREDICTION: Boise State 17, Alabama 10
2nd Round, Orange Bowl Division: 3.) Oklahoma State vs. 11.) Virginia Tech
12 of 15In the Orange Bowl, you get the Oklahoma State Cowboys against the Virginia Tech Hokies. You can't deny that the Oklahoma State offense is explosive. The offense has so many playmakers, that this will be a problem for the Virginia Tech defense.
As you saw last year with Andrew Luck and Stanford, Virginia Tech has a tough time slowing down passing attacks. Look for Brandon Weeden, Kendall Hunter and Justin Blackmon to have HUGE days.
PREDICTION: Oklahoma State 47, Virginia Tech 21
National Semi-Final: 1.) LSU vs. 5.) Oregon
13 of 15The national semifinal played in one of the BCS bowls matches the LSU Tigers against the Oregon Ducks. Both teams now are totally different than what they were in the first week of the season, when they played each other. Oregon now has an identity and has more depth and experience than they did the first week.
On the flip side, LSU's defense has gotten better over the course of the season. This game would match a high-octane offense against a great defense. In the end, I see Oregon scoring just enough to beat LSU and avenge their loss in the beginning of the season and make it to the national championship game once again
PREDICTION: Oregon 27, LSU 24
National Semi-Final: 3.) Oklahoma State vs. 7.) Boise State
14 of 15In the other national semifinal, it's a duel between Brandon Weeden and Oklahoma State against Kellen Moore and Boise State. Both quarterbacks lead explosive offenses. Both quarterbacks are the most accurate in college football. Also, both teams are deserving of a national championship birth and both lost on a field goal as well.
Though Boise State loves the upset, in which they did against Alabama, I believe the Oklahoma State offense will be too much for the Boise State defense, and Oklahoma State will be put in the national championship game.
PREDICTION: Oklahoma State 28, Boise State 24
BCS National Championship Game: 3.) Oklahoma State vs. 5.) Oregon
15 of 15In probably one of the most explosive national championship games we would ever see, the Oregon Ducks will face the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
In a national championship game that will feature absolutely no defense, the explosive offenses will shine. Oklahoma State will have quarterback Brandon Weeden and Oregon will have the like of quarterback Darron Thomas and running back LaMichael James. Look for this game to be one of the highest scoring games in national championship history.
Though both teams have playmakers on offense, the special teams will ultimately make the difference. Freshman D'Anthony Thomas will be the difference in the return game as the Oregon Ducks will avenge their loss in the national championship game last year, and be the true BCS national champions.
PREDICTION: Oregon 56, Oklahoma State 49
