January Transfer Window: 5 Manchester United Rumours from This Week

Rikki SollisDec 24, 2011

With the January transfer window nearly upon us, let's take a moment to look at some of Man United's transfer rumours from the past week.

Ferguson only made one signing last January, adding goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard to the squad for a fee thought to be around £3.5 million. In light of recent injuries, will Sir Alex be a little more frivolous in the transfer market this year?

Inigo Martinez

It is believed that United are taking a closer look at Real Sociedad's Spanish Under-21 centre back Inigo Martinez.

Martinez could be one of the potential successors to Vidic and Ferdinand, joining Jones, Smalling and the Da Silvas as United defensive prospects.

Martinez stands at 5'9'', and has a brilliant eye for goal. In his 12 league appearances for Sociedad, he has scored on three occasions, two of which coming from inside his own half. However, he does also have this blot in his copybook.

Could Fergie turn this mini defensive maestro into a star?

Gaitan On. Gaitan Off. Gaitan On.

Rumours have literally been flying about all week over this one. Some papers say it's on, some say it's off. One day there's a £25 million fee agreed, next day there's not.

The classy midfielder would be a great addition to the side, but you have to question how much of the rumours are truth.

Check out this goal, which just shows how he oozes class. The chances of him signing for United? Well if Fergie's willing to put up a near-£30million fee for him, you'd have to wonder then if Gaitan would be happy losing Champion's League football.

Lucas Biglia

Lucas Biglia's agent claims that United are in the hunt for his client's signature. According to footybunker.com, his agent has stated:

"

Lucas came to Anderlecht in 2006 to learn and grow, I think he is now mature and ready to move to a top club, Biglia has the potential to develop further at an elite club.

"

Anderlecht's 25-year-old midfielder has been on Arsenal's radar for a while now, and whispers around the footballing world suggest that AC Milan and Fiorentina could also be interested in the Argentine.

The player is valued at around the £8 million mark and could offer good cover for injuries in the United midfield.

Sami Khedira

United could be poised to make an £18 million bid for Real Madrid's Sami Khedira.

According to footybunker.com, United are forgetting about Wesley Sneijder and instead are going to turn their attention to the German starlet to fill the creative hole in the middle of the United midfield.

United could face stern opposition for the player, as rivals Chelsea and Man City are allegedly also interested in the player.

Will Fergie be willing to splash out near to £20 million in the January window?

Ferguson Not Looking for a Central Midfielder?

5 of 5

While every other site on the Internet muses as to who Alex Ferguson will bring into his midfield, insidefutbol.com suggests the complete opposite.

The article in question quotes Fergie on saying:

"

It's not easy to buy players for Manchester United, particularly in January, and I don't see anyone, really, who can make us a better team from the players who are possibly available. I could choose two or three players that I'd like to have at this club, but they're not available, so there's no point going there.

"

Will Sir Alex stick to his guns, or will he end up joining in the party for players like Rodwell/Khedira/Gaitan et al?
