4 Reasons Why Tim Tebow Absolutely Does Not Belong in 2012 NFL Pro Bowl

Ryan AlfieriDec 24, 2011

We all know Tebow is going to get a ton of fan votes because of his massive, blind group of supporters. But let's be honest—Tim Tebow has not shown anything to suggest that he is a Pro Bowl-type player.

Yes, he has brought his team back late in games, but had the Broncos offense managed to score more than 10 points in an entire game, they wouldn't need all of these crazy comebacks.

I give Tebow credit for making those plays at the end of games, but if Marion Barber stays in bounds, Jim Leonhard makes a tackle on Eddie Royal in the wrong end zone or Matt Prater misses a 59-yard field goal, we are probably talking about who the Broncos are going to draft to replace Tebow rather than singing his praises.

Here are four reasons why Tebow does not belong in the Pro Bowl.

On-Field Play

1 of 4

Yes, his team has only lost two games with him as starter. But this team in winning in spite of him, not because of him. The Broncos offense has been completely inept at times, which is why they have needed dominant performances from the defense in order to even have a chance at these inexplicable comebacks.

Tebow is improving as a passer, but that is not what the Pro Bowl is about. If you look at Tebow's body of work, it simply does not resemble play of a legitimate NFL starter, never mind a Pro Bowl player.

Put it this way: If you watched all of Tebow's snaps, not knowing his name and reputation, would anyone really think he is a Pro Bowl quarterback?

Missed Time

2 of 4

Even if his stats and on-field play were Pro Bowl worthy, it would be tough to put Tebow in because he missed so much time. He didn't start his first game until Week 6.

We take missed time into account for other players when voting for the Pro Bowl, so why should we ignore the time Tebow spent on the bench? Tebow didn't even miss time because of injury; the coaching staff just believed that Orton was the better quarterback.

Other Deserving Candidates

Should Tebow manage a Pro Bowl berth, it would seriously undermine the play of a lot of other quarterbacks in the AFC. Granted, there are not as many candidates as usual with Peyton Manning out, but there are a lot of quarterbacks I would take over Tebow.

Brady is a shoo-in, as is Roethlisberger. Rivers has turned his game around, but was still a better quarterback than Tebow until his recent surge. Even if we need a replacement, guys like Flacco, Schaub, Hasselbeck and Sanchez are all more deserving.

Horrific Stats

4 of 4

I am not a big believer in using stats to evaluate a player, but you need some decent numbers in order to get into the Pro Bowl.

Tebow has not broken the 1500-yard mark and has a completion percentage under 50 percent. By comparison, the top quarterbacks are throwing for about three times the yardage and are flirting with 70 percent completion.
