Broncos vs Bills: Who Has Brighter Future, Tim Tebow or Ryan Fitzpatrick?

Ryan AlfieriDec 24, 2011

Despite his recent struggles, Ryan Fitzpatrick is clearly the better quarterback. He has a release that is light years faster than that of Tim Tebow. Fitzpatrick reads defenses well and gets the ball out quickly. He has shown the ability to make stick throws into tight windows. He's not the bruising runner that Tebow can be, but Fitzpatrick is one of the more mobile quarterbacks in the NFL.

Still, Tebow is the player with the brighter future, mostly because of his age and upside.

We all know about Tebow's "intangibles," but his recent string of miracle fourth-quarter wins is not the reason why he has a brighter future. In each start, Tebow has shown significant improvement from week to week. He's getting a little more accurate and decisive with each week, and the Broncos are gradually doing away with the option-based offense.

When comparing Tebow's upside to Fitzparick's, it really is not even close. Fitzpatrick is a "developed" player. In other words, he is not going to get a whole lot better than he already is. He is 29 years old and has had a lot of starting experience in the league, and he was able to develop as a quick-strike passer who can be effective in the right system.

Fitzpatrick does not have a cannon arm to work with, so the way he distributes the ball like a point guard in basketball has earned him his big contract a little over a month ago.

Bottom line is, Tebow is still a younger player with a lot more physical tools to work with. However, if he had not been showing improvement as a passer, I would not say he has a bright future at all. If Tebow can continue to improve and the Broncos can eventually adopt a conventional offense that can last long-term in the NFL, the Broncos brass has to like his chances to be the long-term answer at quarterback.
