Trouble Brews for Penn State Football as More Rumors Fall Flat

Gabe ZaldivarDec 23, 2011

It's looking ever more likely that a big-name coach that would save Penn State Football will not be coming anytime soon.

There is a hope that surrounds Happy Valley that better days are ahead. Indeed, there is credence in that notion as a program as steeped in history as this one is bound to get back to glory.

The football program will one day have a coach the people can believe in and the victories will come as richly as they did before. But that day may have to wait a great while longer.

The Nittany Lions have, for now, Tom Bradley as the head coach with interim stuck to the front of his title. It is likely that Penn State will move in a new direction simply for the fact that Bradley was a part of the old regime, and that is something every supporter would like distance from at the moment.

There were some promising rumors that began rising in the last few days, but those have all been extinguished.

David Jones of The Patriot-News caught up with acting Penn State athletic director Dave Joyner. He asked him about two such coaches that were rumored to be on their way to Happy Valley.

"

I saw the Twitter explosion about Boise State coach Chris Petersen being posted as the new coach...and heard another hot rumor that Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak would be announced soon...Joyner claims absolutely no truth to either and actually laughed about both when told.

"

Whether they are dragging their feet or just can't find anyone that will take the job, Penn State is moving far too slowly than is good for the program.

There has to be a new face for Penn State football immediately as recruits are beginning to sign their allegiances elsewhere and current Nittany Lions are considering fleeing a sinking ship.

As a lame-duck head coach, Bradley hardly has the power to invigorate the program this offseason. The dying rumors just mean the coaching search is far more dire than we might have thought.

The tremendous flames of the Jerry Sandusky scandal may be dying down, but this coaching fiasco proves there are indeed a great amount of embers flying around the area.
