Christmas Wish List for Every NFL Team Ruled out of Playoff Contention
Christmas is the season of giving, and the downtrodden teams that have already been eliminated from the NFL playoffs need to be given some love.
They made up the league's cellar this season for their own individual reasons, but they all most certainly have a wish-list that'll help them rebound in the 2012 season.
The lists have been sent to football Santa.
Let's take a look.
St. Louis Rams
1 of 10- Talent in the receiving corp. I know Danny Amendola, a guy with Wes Welker-potential, was injured in the first game of the season, but where's the down-field threat? How about the big, possession target to move the chains?
- Interior defensive lineman and better linebackers. James Laurinaitis isn't a bad guy to have in the middle of the defense, but he isn't elite and needs some more bulk around him. No team has been worse against the run this season. A lot of the longer scampers they've allowed this season have come on plays up the middle.
- A running back to groom behind Steven Jackson?
- Offensive line help, too. Come on, 49 sacks this year?
Hopefully the Rams have been nice this season—they need a ton.
Minnesota Vikings
2 of 10- A secondary. Well, more specifically, an elite cornerback and safety who can anchor the defensive backfield. Opposing quarterbacks have averaged a 110.8 QB rating against Minnesota last year.
- Wide receiving help for Christian Ponder. The rookie signal-caller has shown flashes this season, but outside of Percy Harvin, who does he have to throw to? No one.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
3 of 10- More secondary help. The Buccaneers have the 29th ranked total defense right now, and they haven't stopped anyone during their eight-game losing streak. They've drafted a lot of defensive lineman over the last few years, but they haven't exactly panned out just yet, as they surrender 141 rushing yards per game.
So, a boost to their run defense would be beneficial, too. Maybe some youthful, talented linebackers?
Washington Redskins
4 of 10- A franchise quarterback. I like Roy Helu as the featured runner, but this team won't compete in the NFC East with Rex Grossman or John Beck—I don't care what Mike Shanahan says. Robert Griffin III would be nice.
- Wide receiving help. A recurring theme. Santana Moss and Jabar Gaffney are viable options, but Washington needs a physically intimidating target to move the chains and go after deep balls down the field.
Carolina Panthers
5 of 10- Defensive lineman. The Panthers aren't going anywhere if they can't stop the run. A bulky nose tackle would be a start.
- Secondary members. With Drew Brees and Matt Ryan in the division, they'll need all they can get.
- Most importantly, receiving help for Cam Newton. He's got the two safety-valve tight ends, Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey, and a big-play guy in Steve Smith. A prospect like Alshon Jeffery or Michael Floyd could take Carolina to new heights.
Indianapolis Colts
6 of 10- A franchise quarterback. More specifically, Andrew Luck. I loved the heart shown by Dan Orlovsky against the Texans, but with Peyton Manning's future unknown and one of the best quarterback prospects in the last decade entering the league, it's a no-brainer.
- Skilled cornerbacks. I don't care if it's via the draft or free agency, the Colts defensive backfield is soft and doesn't stop a soul.
Jacksonville Jaguars
7 of 10- RECEIVERS. Plural. I love Maurice Jones-Drew. Love the defense, occasionally. But the receiving corp is straight out of The Replacements. I'm not ready to give up on Blaine Gabbert after one year. Get him an Alshon Jeffery and add a few depth guys in free agency and Jacksonville's on its way back up.
- Offensive line help. Gabbert needs time in the pocket to progress as a passer.
Cleveland Browns
8 of 10- A stable running back. Is Peyton Hillis out? What's the deal there? They need a Trent Richardson-type guy they can rely on in the future.
- Receiving help. Colt McCoy is in dire need of it. Sense a trend? The bad teams don't have great receiving threats, which doesn't bode well in today's game.
Buffalo Bills
9 of 10- Receivers. Stunning, right? Ryan Fitzpatrick isn't nearly as bad as he has been in his last seven games. The current receivers are OK, but Stevie Johnson is the highest-drafted guy and he was taken in the seventh round. Elite talent is greatly needed.
- Pass rushing help. So Aaron Maybin didn't work out. Neither did Shawne Merriman. The Bills have the least amount of sacks in the NFL. With Tom Brady and even Mark Sanchez in the division, that's not a good sign.
Miami Dolphins
10 of 10- A franchise quarterback? I think. Matt Moore's been great over the last two months, but are they ready to move on with him as the guy behind center? I don't think so. The defense is solid, Reggie Bush has exploded and the receiving corp is certainly underrated.
