Oklahoma's Bob Stoops Expects QB Landry Jones to Return for Senior Year

Eric BowmanDec 23, 2011

Despite a rough end to their season, the Oklahoma Sooners have good news as head coach Bob Stoops believes star quarterback Landry Jones will return.

According to Tulsa World, Stoops said via telephone that, "My gut feeling is that he’ll stay."

With USC's Matt Barkley opting to return, it could have an impact on Jones' decision. Going off of Stoops' gut is one thing, so we will have to wait for the official word from Jones.

The junior quarterback is projected as a potential first-round draft pick, but given how this past season went, he may decide to return.

The Sooners failed to live up the preseason hype, and while they would receive it again next year should Jones choose to stay, it wouldn't be as much because of how good other teams are going to be.

Flying somewhat under the radar might be enough to convince Jones to stay. After all, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are losing top talent, meaning the Sooners would be in prime position to win the conference.

USC and LSU will be getting all the love in the 2012 preseason, so there won't be too much added pressure on Jones if he were to come back.

Jones would be without star receiver Ryan Broyles should he return, so that too may weigh on his decision.

Oklahoma had a disappointing 9-3 season this year, and Jones may not want to go out like that. Of course, his ceiling may not get any higher than it is right now.

The Sooners quarterback has a very tough decision to make, and while his teammates, coaches and fans would love for him to return, Jones has to choose what he believes is best for him. It's uncertain how long we'll have to wait until we get the word from Jones himself.
