Bruce Jacobs: Ridiculous On-Air Comments Should Get ESPN Radio Host Fired

Adam WellsDec 22, 2011

Bruce Jacobs' career as an ESPN radio host in Albany, New York needs to end immediately thanks to his insensitive comments made about the teams and players in the WNBA.

He referred to the Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury as the "Los Angeles Lesbians" and "Phoenix Dyke-ury" during the Tuesday broadcast of his show. He tried to backpedal on Wednesday's show by apologizing on the air.

This is what Jacobs had to say (via the Albany Times Union):

"

"My comments yesterday were ridiculous, stupid and amateurish," Jacobs said Wednesday during a 10-minute apology. "I apologize for even uttering the comments, whether you heard them or not, whether you were offended or not."

"

Within that same Albany Times Union article, Jacobs also said that he doesn't believe that he should be fired because "we live in a society today where no matter what you say, you're a bigot or you're a racist."

No, Mr. Jacobs, we think that you are a racist or a bigot when you say racially insensitive things or make statements that are obviously meant to show just how intolerant you are of something that you don't like.

The fact that he is so oblivious as to why people were outraged makes this whole thing worse. He had no reason to say anything along these lines. He was trying to be funny by making anti-gay comments, and insinuating that any woman who plays basketball is automatically a lesbian.

Nothing that Jacobs says from this point on should be taken seriously. I don't care about his apology. It doesn't magically erase anything that he said, and he deserves to be severely punished for his remarks.

ESPN is not off the hook in this situation either. The fact that Jacobs was allowed to come back the next day to host his show was a joke. He had no business being allowed back on the air. And why did it take him a full day to apologize for what he said?

It was bad enough that he said what he said, but to wait a full 24 hours before issuing any kind of statement or apology to the audience is a joke.

I am all for giving people second chances if they make a mistake, but nothing about what Jacobs said was a mistake. He had planned this whole thing out because he thought it would be uproariously funny.

Well, when Jacobs loses his job, as he should, the joke will be on him.
