NFL Playoff Picture: 3 Teams with Glimmers of Hope

Ryan RudnanskyDec 22, 2011

"Any given Sunday."

And so goes the famous saying.

There are 10 NFL teams on the outside looking in that still technically have a shot at making the playoffs. With just two weeks left in the season, this is one of the closest overall playoff chases we've seen in years.

Here are three teams with glimmers of hope that have the best chance of making it into the postseason.

3. Seattle Seahawks (7-7)

This may seem crazy, but bear with me here.

In order for the Seahawks to make the playoffs, they need to win their next two games and either the Atlanta Falcons or Detroit Lions to lose their final two games.

First off, let's look at the Seahawks' first game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Yes, the 49ers are 11-3. Yes, they just beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. But it's also worth noting that the Seahawks have beaten several top teams this season, including the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens.

If the Seahawks beat the 49ers and then beat the Arizona Cardinals, then it gets interesting.

The Lions play the surging San Diego Chargers and Green Bay Packers next. They could legitimately lose both games.

The Falcons should lose to the New Orleans Saints in Week 16. If they have a letdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Seahawks are in in this scenario.

2. Oakland Raiders (7-7)

I don't expect the Raiders to wrestle the AFC West away from the Denver Broncos, but their wild-card chances are interesting.

They have a shot at beating the Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers in the next two games. If that happens, they finish 9-7.

If the New York Jets then lose to the New York Giants in Week 16, even if they beat the Miami Dolphins in Week 17, both teams will have identical records. In that case, the Jets lost to the Raiders this season, so the final wild-card spot would go to Oakland if the Cincinnati Bengals and Tennessee Titans dropped along the way.

1. Philadelphia Eagles (6-8)

It's crazy, the Eagles may have the best shot at the playoffs between these three, despite having a 6-8 record.

If the Eagles beat the NFC-East leading Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, the Jets beat the Giants in Week 16, and the Giants beat the Cowboys in Week 17, the Eagles are in.

And don't think all of these things can't happen.
