NFL Picks Week 16: 7 Favorites That Will Win with Ease

Nick KostoraDec 21, 2011

Lopsided scoreboards will likely be a theme throughout Week 16 of the NFL season.

Quarterbacks such as Seneca Wallace, Josh McCown and Tarvaris Jackson will all have the misfortune of playing elite defensive units.

And the New England Patriots have the opportunity to continue their seven-game winning streak against a Miami Dolphins team that ranks 25th in passing yards allowed per game.

Upsets may happen in the NFL, but it just doesn't seem like Week 16 leaves much room for any such miracles.

Let's look at seven favorites that will win with ease this week.

7. Tennessee Titans over Jacksonville Jaguars

1 of 7

The Jacksonville Jaguars have one of the most anemic passing games the NFL has ever seen.

The Jags throw for an NFL worst 137 yards per game. Blaine Gabbert has under 2,000 yards passing for the entire season.

Where they find success is on the ground. Maurice Jones-Drew has an NFL best 1,337 rushing yards.

Jacksonville will need Jones-Drew to be in top form if they are to beat a Tennessee Titans team coming off an embarrassing loss to the previously winless Indianapolis Colts.

Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is battling injuries but Jake Locker has proven a suitable replacement when needed.

I feel like either quarterback can get the job done against the hapless Jags. Especially considering the playoff stakes riding on this game for Tennessee.

6. Detroit Lions over San Diego Chargers

2 of 7

In this game the Detroit Lions have a chance to clinch their first playoff berth in over a decade.

I don't think the Ford Field faithful will allow them to lose this game.

Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson have rekindled their connection that was so potent in the early part of the season.

For the San Diego Chargers to win they will have to withstand a hostile crowd and outscore the NFL's fifth-ranked passing attack.

I just don't see that happening, especially considering the Chargers have only won two road games this season, against the Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Lions' passing game will put them ahead early, and the crowd will never give San Diego a chance to get back in the game.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers over St. Louis Rams

3 of 7

Ben Roethlisberger was not himself on Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was clearly hampered by his ankle injury and may have caused more harm than good by playing.

Luckily this week the Steelers get to play one of the worst squads in the NFL, the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams have only two wins all year, Sam Bradford is doubtful for this game and they give up the most rushing yards per game in the league.

This makes for a simple formula for Pittsburgh:

Run. The. Football.

Whoever plays quarterback need only to manage the offense. Let Rashard Mendenhall carry the load against a Rams defense that allows 153 rushing yards per game.

If they follow that formula, the Steelers should have no trouble this week against the Rams.

4. San Francisco 49ers over Seattle Seahawks

4 of 7

The San Francisco 49ers victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football solidified one thing:

San Francisco's defense is playing the best football of any unit in the league.

The 49ers defense has allowed zero rushing touchdowns all season and they give up only 71 rushing yards per game.

That means for the Seattle Seahawks to compete in this game they will have to throw the football, something they have been terrible at all season.

The Seahawks throw for less than 200 yards per game, and quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has just as many interceptions (12) as he does touchdowns this season.

Seattle already had their big upset this season against the Baltimore Ravens, don't look for another miracle here.

3. New England Patriots over Miami Dolphins

5 of 7

The Miami Dolphins have tasted success recently, winning five of their last seven games.

But this week they play a New England Patriots team that has won seven consecutive games and is preparing for yet another playoff run.

The fact that Miami has turned things around so greatly after starting the season 0-7 is commendable.

They just don't stand much chance against the Patriots right now.

New England has scored at least 30 points in every game during their current winning streak, and Tom Brady is averaging over 300 yards passing per game.

The Dolphins are a decent team and they actually have the league's third-ranked rushing defense.

If they can find a way to force New England to run the ball they can contend, unfortunately that is a formula not too many teams have been able to figure out.

2. Baltimore Ravens over Cleveland Browns

6 of 7

For the second time in the month of December, the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns will face off against one another.

And for the second time the Ravens will win the contest, this time perhaps more convincingly.

Cleveland may be a victim of circumstance more than anything in this matchup.

Baltimore will be hungry after being embarrassed by the San Diego Chargers on Sunday Night Football, and the Browns will have to play without Colt McCoy under center.

The Browns stood little chance with McCoy playing, but have zero chance with Seneca Wallace at quarterback.

The Ravens defense is too dominant to give up points to a Browns offense that ranks in the bottom third of the league in both passing and rushing.

1. Green Bay Packers over Chicago Bears

7 of 7

It is unknown how the 2011 Green Bay Packers respond after losses because up until now they haven't had any.

But after a surprising upset at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending world champions now turn their sights on divisional rival Chicago Bears.

Chicago has absolutely everything going against them heading into this game.

Their star quarterback and running back are on the shelf, newly announced starter Josh McCown has not started a game since 2007 and the Packers still have something to play for.

If Green Bay had beaten the Chiefs last week they could of secured home field throughout the playoffs and possibly rested players against the Bears.

As it stands, the Packers will enter this game angry and looking to regain lost momentum.

Chicago has almost no chance at winning this contest, and their playoff hopes should be all but gone.
